Exhaust pipe replacement

It's time for a new exhaust set up. Mine has been rattling from the center muffler separating. Since I'm replacing it, now would be the time to upgrade.
I currently have a 200tdi 110 with the center & rear mufflers. I'm reading about upsizing the exhaust &/or removing the mufflers for lower EGT's. I'm not having a problem with high temps with the existing set up. How much of a benefit would it be to leave the 200tdi down pipe & upsize from there? Better to have a custom down pipe made?

Custom down pipe would make a difference but, it’s still a 200TDI. So probably not worth the time/money/effort.

Biggest thing I noticed on my 200TDI was going to a straight pipe all the way back. Seemed to let the turbo spool easier and felt peppier, like it could breathe a lot better.

I’d suggest the cheapest possible straight pipe system you can put together. And upsize it if you’re really looking to open things up.

That's the route I want to go. I'm all about less parts & keeping it to simple functionality. Wondering about the noise & exhaust smoke increase without any muffler at all. Don't want to be obnoxious.

The RN system is nice if you want something stainless, mandrel bent, more free flowing, and mostly turn-key. Shops here in hillbilly GP don't do stainless systems, maybe over there in Medford, but thankfully we don't have much winter salt to contend with either. Could take it to a few shops and see what they propose. Custom has the most potential and if you go that route you can have them add a flex joint to the down pipe. I doubt there's much performance to be had from upsizing since the head, manifold, and turbo passages are so small.

Fast forward - Check out "The Unboxing Swag" thread. Didn't have to have anything custom made with the 3" catback system. Install pics to follow as soon as I get some time.

Out with the old! Lots of evidence of driving it off road & neglecting maintenance. Muffler break rattled like crazy. I'm encouraged by the side by side bend comparison. Soaking the turbo/downpipe flange with Kroil overnight. Even though it's going to get dirty as soon as I hit the hills again, I need to pressure wash the underside a bit before installing something so clean & shiny.

I'm simultaneously jealous of both your exceedingly shiny new exhaust and all the filth your has collected from actual use.

Good news & bad. Matches up to the turbo, but the downpipe touches the engine oil feed pipe & oil drain sump assembly hexagonal mounting screw. I think I'm going to have to remove the standoff mounting screw & bend up a bracket that offsets the pipes.

The pipes both have flexible lower ends, so I'm pretty sure I can rotate the oil drain sump pipe & bend the oil feed pipe slightly for enough clearance. I have a 200tdi on an engine stand with a better view of the pipes & mounting screw. Here is a drawing of my idea. Current problem on the left. Relocate solution on the right. Offset bracket pieces top middle. What do you think?

Impressive drawing skill there. Another strategy could be making a flange spacer from sheet and/or stacking gaskets to move the whole downpipe away from the oil feed pipe / hex mount screw.

That's a good idea! I only need about 1/4" to remove contact. I'll try that before I start altering the design.

I need this in my truck. I also need the time to do it. lol

Thank you for the updates. My truck was a Diesel Turbo (19J) and was converted to a 200Tdi except for the exhaust so this will be a nice addition.

Wondering what the before and after sound and smoke might be.

I’m having a flange spacer plate worked up, so I don’t have to stack gaskets. Considering exhaust wrap with the closer clearances, The kit came with new exhaust to chassis brackets. Will post sound & smoke results when finished.

I had these turbo to down pipe spacers made up, but they were made with the original gasket as a guide & the fit wasn't great to the new exhaust flange, so I had a second round made up based on the new exhaust flange gasket.
