Early 110 swivel ball seal

One of my front swivel ball seals cracked while I was out in the desert and started leaking. I had an NOS Genuine seal lying around, maybe from my NAS truck, that is P/N LR059968. I installed it and it's definitely not the right size; it began leaking almost immediately.

I think that the P/N I need is actually 571890, an older, thicker seal:

Can anybody that's done a swivel ball seal on an early 110 confirm this part number?

Hmmmm. Well, I'm quite certain that LR059968 is not the correct size because the lips don't hold tightly enough. (TWSS)

This front axle is a mutt. It's a RRC tube with the outers from the original early 110 axle. The swivel balls themselves are some Allmakes replacement. I have no idea what their part number was. Brian Hall might know; I bought them from him.

I don't know of any ONE place where the data is all gather together in an easy to read format, but microcat has different pdf's for each model with a list of serial number ranges.

I am sure you have checked this, but if your top swivel pin isn't seating far enough into the bearing, essentially not enough preload, they will leak because the swivel ball leans out away from the seal slightly.

That's good to know. I'm pretty sure I got the preload set exactly where I wanted it and I didn't have any leaks until about a year and a half after the axle rebuild. The leak started because the seal cracked. I think I just have the wrong seal. I guess I should try that thicker Rangie seal.

Worth a shot trying the other seal. Really, who knows, with these trucks figuring out what fits is half the hassle. I have plenty of parts that that should be right but don't fit my truck. It's how we end up with the giant parts hoards.

Plus similar to what you said, you have parts from half a dozen trucks back and can't remember what they went to, just to muddy the water more when you look through your stash.

There are definitely two different seals I have seen on Defenders. The one from a standard swivel ball rebuild kit would not work in my early 110. The guess I made that chris needs is the early RRC seal.

I read that whole thread on those broken swivel balls and what a bore. A few hundred posts by Internet lawyers and Internet engineers and one actual person who suffered breakages. He broke both of his swivels at different times, which tells you a lot about this guy. (Who breaks a swivel and doesn't immediately shit-can the other and buy new ones?)

The guy was running offset wheels and Jeep tires and was beating the shit out of the truck in a muddy off-road park during both breakage episodes. Despite seven pages of thread and hundreds of comments, the source of his crappy swivels is never revealed although many people are mentioning Britpart.

I'm not going to worry about my balls unless someone has first-hand knowledge of an Allmakes swivel ball breaking.

My friend's shop had them fail on more than one truck. All were low speed off road failures from what I remember, so no crashes into a bus full of orphans. Later on in the text he said it could have been All Makes, but doesn't remember. I have no idea who supplies to Worldpac.

After you find the correct seal go to Tractor Supply Company and buy a couple bottles of 00 grease. It's in the PTO area, not the oil/grease area (go figure). Pump it into the ball instead of using lube or expensive one-shots.

If you are going to run grease, that is definitely the way to go. I personally won't run grease, but that's just me. If the swivel ball is sealed correctly it will hold 90WT. That gives you the ability to drain it, rinse it down and refill if you happen to get water in it. Plus I drain mine every year. I have had to many trucks with corroded swivel balls that had grease in them. A lot of people think that is a one time fix, and LR was selling it as the fix for years instead of making peoples seals actually work.
