Defender TDI 200 (1991) Gear Stick and Swivel Housing

Dear all

Do you guys know if this area (gear stick - please see attached photo-red circle) needs to be greased? I don't know why, but when engaging 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse gears, there's a sound like "kher kher" (something sounding like metal touching metal), causing occasional gear grinding. I am considering upgrading to The Syncro Gearboxes' Slickshift, but I'm not sure if it will improve the situation or not.

And also, for the swivel housing, is the light blue circle for filler plug, and the red circle for level plug? Is there any drain plug? (at bottom?). Please see photo as attached, thank you.

I think I greased mine. You also need a new rubber boot.

I have the slick shift kit, I don't even remember how long the throw was before, but I think I did like it. But make sure your turret is in good shape because I had so much play when in gear

It should be greased but the cover boot is torn which will let dirt contaminate it and turn it into an abrasive. The tower the shaft/ball joint sits in is aluminum and often wears out relative to the pins seen just below/right of your red circle. Check for significant wear on both sides. You may also have an issue inside the lower shift assembly where a component has come loose.

On the swivels, you have the ports identified correctly. Later axles omitted the drain port due LR switching to one-shot 00 grease. The only way to get it out was either rebuild the swivel or let it leak out (not unlikely).

Alright, planning to change the turret as well. So, the rubber boot is the link that you provided below (Grommet Gear Lever)? because the size of the grommet looks small.

Ok, it looks like I have to change the whole set of it. Can a turret cure the lower shift assembly?, or not related? Oh, but mine is a TDI 200; I'm not sure if it still has the drain plug, and I'm uncertain about whether the previous owner used oil or grease. If open the level plug and see?

unless I missed a detail, I'd strip down the turret and clean up and grease everything, reassemble with new gasket and rubber grommet. if the turret has serious damage or play thats a different story.

Swivel fluids, open the check plug and dip (zip-tie or something like that). will be easy to see if it's grease or oil.

Alright, thank you for the clear procedures. Cheers! I'm thinking of removing and checking the conditions first. Thanks for everything.
