Cost for dif gear swap?

Not sure but with alittle elbow grease you can actually be net positive cash by selling your 4.11 and getting new thirds already set up. I have two stock thirds in buckets if you are in need from a 97 defender

^^ What Dan said ^^

If you currently have some 4.11's already set up in your 3rd members, it's only a couple hours to swap them out for some stock 3rds.

Do yours have any type of limited slip or locking differentials in them?

If so, I would get someone to trade you their stock set up plus some cash (or labor cost if you pay a shop to do the swap)

As others have said, just swap the complete third member. You can sell your current diffs with the 4:11's. A diff from a Disco or RRC will work also.

Ok, an ARB and a TruTrac already set up with 4.11s will be desired by someone.

Are you capable of wrenching on the truck or are you taking it in somewhere?

Sorry for my naivety with this. I'm comfortable wrenching the easier pieces; radiator, h2o, hoses, starters, etc. Getting into a differential is something I'd rather have performed for me rather than by me.

At this point I'd like to keep the air setup intact and improve on-road driving.

Would these be my options?

1) have 4.11 swapped back to original stock (which I have)
2) swap the entire dif setups which would require dismantling the entire oba setup

Would there be a market for the removed GBR 4.11s, assuming option 1, to offset some of the cost?

If you have larger than stock tires I would stick with current set up. What is your goal with stock gearing? Much easier and cheaper even if paying someone to swap in the entire third vs rebuilding each differential.

It's very easy to swap out the Rover 3rd members(which contain the differentials)
It's just a matter of unbolting the axles, dropping the driveshafts, and pulling out the 3rd member-- these are like Toyotas or Ford 9" because the whole assembly is removeable and the gears/differential can be set up on a bench top.
A trunk monkey can do this.
Even I have done this job.... many times.:D

If another member were to trade you some stock 3rd members, you'd just bolt them right in.
You could even leave most of the OBA in place... more on that later.

Now, changing the gear set in a 3rd member or changing the differential is a more complicated animal and requires a certain skill set/tools/touch.

Either option requires your 3rd members to be pulled from the vehicle.

Thanks guys,
Tires are stock size. Small lift but don't want to go for bigger tires. Goal is to be able to make the drives to the beaches and city easier. I may swap out the springs to bring the truck down to stock height eventually.

What truck did you end up with? I remember you looking for a while on that other site.

There's some reputable mechanics/shops in the Boston area.
I know some guys who wheel up there who might work on the side...

If you're going for a stock driver, we will find you some stock 3rds to swap in for your taller geared/locked diffs.
That will be easier than putting the stock gears back in your 3rds.

I recently sold a set of 3rds for $1300--- a Detroit locker rear and Trutrac front with 4.11s.
A similar set with an ARB could fetch that amount; maybe a wee bit more on a good day (unless I'm buying :))

I'm getting there. I still need to figure costs for the options. I'll be having some work done in the next few weeks (oil cooler lines, fluid changes). I'll be sure to get an estimate for a swap and then come up with a plan.

I picked up a great 97 SW from out west. The rover community has been incredibly helpful. I hope to be able to return the favor at some point. I'll get some pics up once I have a chance to give it a good cleaning.

Any thoughts on cost for a set of take-off 3rds? Are there other, non-NAS 90 versions that are identical?

Yes... any Discovery from 1994-2004 and Range Rover Classics(1994,1995).
These are all 24 spline differentials in the 3rds and stock gearing(3.54)

Used to be you could get a stock 3rd for around $50-75. Shipping is pricey because they weigh 55lbs.

yep there is a market for this, (me for instance), who is actively going to 4.11's and lockers. Because of a trailer and 33's ...

Oh and I don't need the OBA setup (keep it and just block off everything but the hose outlet and your gold or pull it too and sell it also.

I can pull my thirds off of my 95 D90 which have stock gearing, and no lockers. I wasn't planning on a Detroit locker (just FYI) but could take mine offline for a couple of weeks mid/late April and ship them to your shop and you could just have them swapped then ship them out to me.
we would need come to an understanding on price

a thought..

Thanks for the offer. I'd rather not sell off the parts right away, instead I'd probably buy a second set and hold onto the modified ones until I have some more time with the truck.

I'll check a few local places for take-offs. Any suggestions on other places to look for a set besides a "wanted" post here? There are a few other items I'll be hunting for, I suppose I should make one list and post it up.

There are probably some good pick-n-pull junkyards in your area with good Discovery 3rd members.
For a street driven truck, the 3rds last a loooong time.
Plus, New England trucks die of cancer, not mechanical failure!
