Constant plume of black smoke

1990 Defender110 ex mod. Seems kinda weird, i drive in 4th gear prior to shifting to 5th and little to no smoke, shift to 5th gear and a constant plume of black smoke. Runs fine, holds 60mph when i am on long trips. Thinking dont worry about it or see if it’s something i need to address.

Without seeing anything in person it sounds like a dirty or failing injector.

concur, mine did the exact same thing until I replaced the injector tips.

Depends on the engine, and how lucky you are. But yes certainly a DIY job if everything goes correctly. 2.5 NA or 2.5T injectors are much less expensive than 200/300

I had no idea if I was going to be able to get the injectors off in my drive, so I outsourced this job. I had a few other tuning things done so I don't honestly remember the cost for this part of it.
