Considering a NAS

Very.

That’s the saggiest soft top I’ve seen. Looks like it’s missing vital support.

I had this one inspected and it’s: running hot, has a bit of an oil leak, the differential wouldn’t lock. Check engine light was also stuck on but it wasn’t showing any codes.

All seems fixable, but not sure if these things are normal with these.

For that price I'd honestly expect the issues you identified (sans the oil leak) to be sorted out. Oil leaks are common on these trucks.

I've never been in nor closely followed the market for NAS trucks. However it just feels to me like prices are coming down and that you can get something in good shape for less than $100k. As usual maybe I'm wrong.

Not that BAT is the end all for pricing - but you can get an idea here on where things are going currently - https://bringatrailer.com/land-rover/defender-90-nas/

Also - There's no important pictures on that one. Frame, bulkhead, footwells, etc. to see where the rust is, did your inspection cover frame and body?

It seems we are entering the era of 'lipstick on a pig' NAS trucks, much like has existed for years with ROW trucks. These trucks you have linked are a lot of coin, but not worth the asking price IMHO. Research and Good Inspection by someone knowledgeable of these vehicles will help prevent overpaying for poor-fair trucks that have been tarted up. Don't fall for the glitz, as someone else has pointed out, neither of these ads includes photos of known problem areas, that should be a red flag.

I'd expect to pay that for a low mileage, stock to nearly stock (at least all mods reversible) NAS truck that has been enthusiast owned and well maintained. Personally, I don't see either of these trucks being either of those.

Sawtooths.... 🤮

I've been advising people who really want a good truck and story, is for them to get off the internet and talk to people. put feelers out, the old school methods. This is where i've seen some really great rigs pop up and sell.

I've had a couple of guys reach out to me on the side about other available Defender 90s that I've not seen online before. If anyone is aware of ones you'd recommend that are D90 soft tops, please let me know. I'd even be interested in one with a larger engine swap.
Thanks!!

Personally I don't see the logic behind the premium for NAS trucks..I think the ROW trucks much better. Id take a well sorted 200 or 300TDI all day..

But with a $100k budget, as mentioned above Id think you could find a really nice turnkey truck. Copley has a few that appear to be decent. Why not look there?

Alpine bow is missing for sure. Also love the seller comment that he replaced the wheel sensors for the ABS brakes

97 D90 have ABS wheel sensors. In fact, they throw check engine light codes “rough road” even though they do not have ABS.

It is pretty funny that they use all that hardware only to disable overly aggressive engine management off idle when engine rate of rotation is affected by the road irregularities. Never thought of that.
