I'm of the opinion that "boys will be boys". As long as nobody is throwing rocks or spitting you guys and gals can carry on. Ribbing keeps us humble and personally if I quit making fun of you I don't like you anymore. #mancode

One of the great things about a vehicle that was made for as long as these were, is that there are plenty of "Defenders" that have been modified to see what works & what doesn't.
As someone who struggles with the courage to make changes away from Rover original, I really appreciate the chance to see someone else do it first!
So far this sight has been supportive and friendly compared to most.
I think a little ribbing in fun is alright.

Critique is one thing. Using inside jokes and speaking about someone as if they are not "in the room" is another. Especially if you want additional participation.

I'm open for criticism, but relating what I am doing to someone who is a laughing stock was not appreciated.

Put it this way. For one, I do think you did a good job with it. It actually does look pretty good. It isn't what I would do, but it is your truck, and even if I personally would not do that, I don't think you ruined it. It is better than what a lot of other people have done (most of them I've seen in person, and they are people not on these boards). And it is far and away better than the Netjaws crap.

I was there when Netjaws first let the world see his abomination, and you are not the first to illicit the flashbacks. It's just that when someone does something to their interior, it's what we who were there all think about.

Think of it as a cautionary tale of how an idea can take on a life of its own. Honestly, I really do check myself on my ideas and ask myself: WWNJD? It has saved me from embarrassment many times. And sorry if you felt personally attacked by it. Or if you thought I was attacking your actual work on this project. I simply don't like the look of it, but I really do think you did a good job, and it isn't a bad idea.

On that note, I need to figure out how to add at least a switch panel and one or two VDO instruments to my cockpit, but I have not come up with my own solution. So I'm sure you all will get a chance to Netjaws me in the near future.

I appreciate your thoughtful response.

It's all silly, in the end, and really not a big deal. My response had nothing to do with whether anyone liked what I had done or not. I like it and that's what matters to me. And it looks a lot better in person, in my biased opinion, if that's worth anything. This is my 5th Defender in the last 15 years and I have a pretty good idea of what I like and don't like.

Thing is, I have no idea who Netjaws was/is, so to me it was an inside joke and it turned me off a bit as I felt like you guys were laughing at me. Thick skin or not, I am not coming here for that. I have been a member of the D-90 source for many years, and I thought I would give this forum a try because there are many familiar faces here, and I thought I would "help the cause" and see where it goes. This was my first real contribution and I am not sure there will be many more. At least now I will only post things that I know are "worthy".

My only recommendation is that although ribbing is fine (if you have a relationship already) it's usually better around a campfire with a few beers being passed around.

Fair points, but maybe stick around anyway.

I'm here for similar reasons, but mainly because the other site became extremely cumbersome for me to use. It no longer fit with the way I "consume" information and entertainment, which is largely on mobile devices. Post sale, the standalone app and tapatalk interface crash constantly, and the website is miserable to use, even on a laptop or desktop. Granted, I'm not using an ad blocker, but it is what it is.

I have friends on both boards, and enjoy the defender community as a whole. I admire what Dave and Chris set out to do, and it fit with my wants as well. That said, had the sale of the other site been seamless from a user perspective, I may not have invested as heavily in participating here.

At the end of the day, I'd like to see this forum succeed, and I believe that for that to happen, content is king. For me personally, it doesn't all have to be technical excellence, particularly if there is to be a true community feel. Moderators are necessary, and I think Dave summed it up nicely.

So, that's a long winded way of saying stick around. A forum needs its members.

Heck, RBB has a three page thread on how to get four bolts in. That's stinkin awesome.

Exactly.

Jeez, I remember RBB's headgasket job on a LWB on Dweb 10 years ago.
The bumper has that beat.

But I agree with his assessment of the center stack. It isn't what I'd do but it does look fairly well executed and there have certainly been worse!

Ben, if you still can't get your bumper on, I'm guessing that it's because one of the four bolts won't catch in the captive plate. This may be due to minor differences in your frame's construction. What you'll need to do is make a new captive plate out of a scrap of steel flat plate from Home Depot. You basically cut it to size using the old plate as a template and then use a punch to make a mark where the bolts want to screw in, then drill the holes on those marks and run a tap through them to put threads in them. A custom-sized captive plate. This is the only way I could get my Brownchurch bumper to fit.

As for the ribbing, I'm not going to pretend to be someone I'm not just to get more people on the site. My friends know I will dish out shit the same around a campfire as I will online. If you think that I actually dislike you in real life because I compare your double binnacle to NetJaws, you're probably taking the Internet too seriously.

When you get the chance, when you stop driving around Utah for just one second! check out the pics on the bumper thread. Threading the bolts is not the problem.
