Carling Start/run switch

Planning my lower dash replacement and weighing rewiring possibilities.

Is installing a Carling switch to take over start/run (starter solenoid/IP fuel switch) function worth doing? I'm thinking a slight theft deterrent and circumventing ignition switch failure. The key would have to be used to unlock steering but then anybody could start it (if they knew where to look) with the steering locked and perhaps cause some real damage.

I've noticed it mentioned in posts occasionally so am considering. Thoughts.

When I did that in my Disco due to a faulty security system, the only bad side was it could be started in gear causing the truck to lurch forward/backward. That can end badly very easily. I don't know if a Defender has the same safety switch, but it's worth considering.

Thanks for the input Greg.

I haven't tried it, or made the mistake, but I don't think my 130 has a clutch safety switch. I'm afraid I would consider that an advantage, as if your clutch actuation goes out you are not stranded. In other vehicles, decades ago, I have driven without a clutch in stop and go traffic with no problem. Hard on parts, but you can get home.

I just noticed this at SDO but nothing about function.

Turn the key to on and then use the carling? Thus you still can't start the engine without the key to maintain theft deterrence?

Anyone using one of these care to share how you set it up?
