Badge refinishing?

Is there a particular technique to freshening up an NAS badge? The one on my truck looks sort of oxidized.

I'd rather not remove it to repaint. Light sand in place with som 200 grit and a block? Coat it afterwards?

I think you can buy a new blank and stamp your number in.
