I wasted may hours today due to somebody grabbing our banking information and changing the email account password from my wife iPad or iPhone. The bank fraud department people say she has malware lurking somewhere. Everybody I called today says it cannot happen on a non jailbroken iPad/iPhone. I need some sound advice please.

I've always been under the same impression with IOS devices as "Everybody". I wonder if the devices were used on an open wifi network.

VPN's have always interested me but I've never pulled the trigger. I shut off wifi in public places just in case.....

Short answer is that non jailbroken are indeed at risk. The core OS cannot be touched but web, apps, and other supporting environments can. My gut reaction is to factory wipe and restore whatever is needed Except for the apps. Backups could be compromised.aso just reinstall what is needed.

Of the 1200 devices I manage daily most attacks are not apps, but web sites, links, and phishing, although hijacked apps do make it through on occasion.

For future mitigation, use a password manager like lastpass, get a vpn for unknown wifi usage, and can even try apps like bitdefender, avira, or avast.

Sorry to hear this happened.

IMO the most likely cause is phishing attacks. New IOS devices with the newest secure enclave hardware are pretty uncrackable, even by the Chinese military. But if a user is deceived into accessing a bad website, installing a malicious app (unlikely on IOS), or giving up information from a phishing attack ...
