And here we go - Billowing White Smoke

Despite my esteemed colleague Smeggman's 4 doors of guessing.....none of which would be my go to (although the fixes for Morty's guesses are cheaper than my diagnosis), here's my best guess.

Hadn't you been having cooling system pressurization issues ?

Sounds like #4 cyl of head gasket to me (hissing sound from back of head).

Cyl is under 385-400 psi and higher when under load ie boost. When it's under boost and leaking worse than @ idle you will get incomplete combustion which results in white smoke out tail pipe. Oil out the cap is result of pressurizing oil gallery/ crank case
That is my arm chair diagnosis based on descriptors.

Thanks Doug - great memory. Yes, I was having cooling system pressurization issues, but that got resolved in short order by Safari, and thankfully, has not been an issue since.

That separator should not be under pressure- its supposed to be under vacuum.

Have you tried pulling the dipstick out and have someone rev the engine while you hold your finger over the end of the dipstick tube ?
Does it pressurize/ push against your finger ?

Yep, weird, but definitely the source of the hissing sound...vacuum leak I guess?

Have not done the dipstick tube check yet, eyeballing this thing solo at the moment. Will try it when my peoples get home.

Did not yet have a second set of hands (or feet) to rev the engine with the dipstick out, so I pulled the dipstick out while the motor was idling and it was intermittenly gurgling oil back up at me.

I presume this will be indicative of pressure while revving the engine? If so, likely a head gasket, rings or piston problem?

Ugh. Was hoping for a hissing cyclone breather solution.

You should be able to move the cable on the IP to rev the engine while holding your finger over the dip stick tube.

Seems to be the case...two simple things at one time: one clogged injector and a slightly cracked cyclone breather.

Sweet!

Start saving your change for a new IP and rebuilding you injectors. Just a matter of time but not the end of the world.
