Adding extra lights to the interior?

Im trying to figuire out a way to add some lighting to the interior of my 110. Aside from the gauge cluster in the binnacle its pretty freakin dark at night when driving. Was thinking maybe a battery powered LED strip or something along those lines..thought maybe someone here may have already found some good solutions..

When my Tithonus gel top was on, I had a powered LED strip to a rocker switch on the dash. I'm planning on doing the same with the soft top since the wire is available.

I'd guess a battery powered strip would work too. It was more then enough light in my case. (Edit: ahh you are looking for cabin lighting when driving..)

Isn’t that what you want when driving at night?

Similar to cockpit/cabin lighting, very dim light to at least see the dash area is ideal. Not even as bright as this pic really. Modern cars do it well with LEDs tucked away that provide gentle illumination to things you might need to press or grab.

Yeah, it’s a contrast/gradient thing. my career is in lighting, even out of cars, it’s a thing.

My “modern” car is a 2004 Saab convertible. All of the switches are illuminated and the brightness adjustable. Saab philosophy was almost total darkness while driving and provided a switch labeled Nightpanel which basically blanked out everything except tach and speedometer.

Nothing drives me crazier than when wifey pulls out her iphone and doesn't shield it from interfering with my night vision. If you are trying to add background lights, try to go with Red lights.....

I made this and have it installed on the roof rib just behind our heads.

Printed with ASA (not really dialed in well), it uses 6 LED "bolts":

4 3W white LEDs, triggered by either manual switch on dash for ON-OFF-SWITCHED from door switches.
2 3W red LEDs, power relay switched from headlights, and arranged in OFF, passenger, passenger+driver.

So this is still a work-in-progress, but i have this dome light bracket on my soft top:

And this dome light: https://www.roversnorth.com/parts/pll159_interior_switched_lamp_assembly_for_defender

And then i bought some super tiny red, flush mount LEDs on amazon, and a dimmer knob, and I'm going to add those to the dome light. My goal is to have the same lighting as 00s Audis, super dim, diffuse, red light to blanket the area in a very subtle glow, and obviously only on when the headlights are activated. I have all the parts for this, but haven't gotten through the to-do list enough to get to this one yet.

As seen in these pics I installed these light strips I picked up off the bay of flea. Self adhesive and just wired them into the door light switches. The overhead OE lights have another LED grid which is plug and play in the festoon bulb socket. Positively daylight when you open a door for like $10 🤷‍♂️

Good luck
