300tdi with EDC - Electronic Diesel Control - rapid electrical ticking sound

Hello everyone,

I’ve inherited a fine 1998 300tdi auto Discovery.

Unfortunately I do not know anything about the history of the car so I have immediately replaced the cam and auxiliary belts and serviced it.

Something I hadn’t noticed at-first, but is very prominently evident to me now, is a rapid electrical ticking sound from the injector pump, even before the engine is started (‘ignition’ on), that continues when the engine is running. The engine, starts, drives and stops perfectly.

Please could anyone who might know tell me if you know what the ticking will be and if it is anything I need to attend to?

Pull the wire from the stop solenoid, be sure it’s not grounded to anything and turn your ignition switch to on. Do you still hear the noise?

Hello, thank you very much for the diagnostic tip. I disconnected the stop solenoid and have found that makes no difference at all. The noise remains a mystery...
