200TDI Turbo / Engine Sputtering at Highway Speed?

My 1991 200TDI engine functions properly driving around town and never has any issues starting up. As soon as I pass 100 kmH it intermittently sputters and the turbo goes in and out. It has a full tank of gas, all air hoses are connected, and transmission shifts cleanly. I am not a mechanic but am handy. My current search results suggest an air bubble in the fuel system or the fuel pump has gone bad. Has anyone here had a similar issue and/or have any suggestions to repair?

You are on the right track with your thinking. Another cause could be a clogged fuel filter or the filter seal is drawing in air. Here is what I would do in this order taking a test drive between each steps.
1) Tighten all fuel fittings
2) Replace the fuel filter
3) Replace the lift pump
4) Double check engine timing
5) Have injectors tested
6) Have injector pump tested

- Remove the fuel line going into the injection pump and stick line into container.
- Remove the wire going to the injection pump.
- Crank engine.

You should get a lot of fuel being pumping out of the hose. If none, the lift pump is broken. If a weak flow, the filter or line is plugged. If a lot of air comes with it, there is a broken or loose line.
