Everyone has ads now, even the moderators... We should find a way to capture the content and put it here.

I am pretty much done over there. The only reason I tolerate it on the AlfaBB is it’s the only thing going really. For Rovers I have the NAS-ROW option so will be spending my time here.

I will probably be browsing. and definitely posting, less and less there. The old "Source" is now fully commercialized, which will cause it to die a slow, painful death.

Long live NAS-ROW!

Can we undermine it? I’ll put a not-subtle plug for w w w . n a s - r o w . c o m in my sig block. It’s just assumed that the mods will provide free labor, I’ve never signed an agreement or clicked a EULA of any kind and I’ve had mod privileges since Chris VonC owned it. I’m still more than a little bothered that he monetized it so suddenly without offering to sell it to any of us.

Noticed it today, have been helping a series based forum for more than a decade for free. Every so often we pass the hat and pay for the hosting fees. As soon as you go all click bait / ad you lose the purpose of the forum. I logged it today and hate it.

I moderated it for years for free (not that it took a lot, but there were some sporty episodes). I’m happy to volunteer for a non-profit, but I won’t be free labor for someone else’s cash cow.

Bummer to hear that, don’t blame you. So who owns/owned it? And why would they expect the mods to stay around with no prior communication?

Too bad though there is a ton of archived information over there.

Speaking of terrible, sorry about the little NAS-ROW outage just now. Our server software introduced some new configuration syntax and refused to start up after I ran some software updates tonight. It's fixed now and won't bother us in the future.

That new site is pretty unbelievable. I'm a little amazed by all of the people bitching about the ads. They know there's an ad-free Defender site, right?

What's also kind of funny is that some people said that NAS-ROW was just a big scam to kill the old site and get everybody to move someplace new, which would be then sold off at a profit. Well, NAS-ROW turned three years old a couple of weeks ago and here we are, still non-commercial and ad-free. Dave and I have said it before and I'll say it again: we'd shut this site down before we ever went commercial.

weird. I just logged on their for the first time since conversion after seeing this thread. I don't see any ads.

Chris, you should have an error splash page that says "scheduled social media break. go talk to a real person"

Most modern ad-blockers are fairly effective at removing ads but this will be short-lived. More and more sites are introducing "first party" trackers where the ads are coming from the site itself (versus external advertising services). In this type of configuration, the site secretly shares data about you with the ad companies on the backend, hidden from your view, and the site then proxies in ads from those ad companies. Ad blocker plugins can't easily detect or block this behavior. This is the reason that your ad blocker, for example, doesn't block Facebook ads on that site.

There are lots of other possibilities for data collection if they wanted to do it. They can collect your "clickstream" data (i.e., who you are and what you look at on the site) and share that secretly with ad companies so that they can target you. Looking at a post on tires over there? You might see some Facebook ads for Tire Rack next week.

NAS-ROW, on the other hand, is entirely non-commercial here and do not share data or run first-party trackers or ads.

Chris, you should have an error splash page that says "scheduled social media break. go talk to a real person"

I'm pretty sure that you're bound by their Terms of Use policy every time you use the site. Please don't undermine them. Just continue to hang here and post here exclusively. We are building up a corpus of knowledge every day. The bigger we get, the more people that find us and hang out. It's a virtuous cycle.
