Hi All!
I‘m in Canada and have a 2003, 130 TD5.
The truck came in this summer and i had some concerns about the stock temp gauge as it spent more time then in on the high side of ‘center’. So this Fall i replaced the thermostat and the temp sending unit. All was good for a while and the temp gauge was a bit more ’friendly‘ and spend more time just over the center line. Then the truck did not get used a ton as i was out of town, etc.
Now it’s Winter, I’m using it more and typical outside temp is In the teens or 20’s F. (Not C). I have a radiator muff on it trying to get a bit more interior heat (but I’m not sure it makes a diff for that). The muff is fully open, not at all closed.
The truck is garaged at about 45F. Outside temp is 21F. I pull it out of the garage to warm up for a few minutes and within the first 2 minutes the temp gauge goes to center. As i drive out the drive and on slow dirt roads for the next 10 minutes it climbs a bit but still just on the high side of center. Speed is about 40kph.
Then as soon as i get on the hiway and get up to ‘speed’, about 80-85kph, the gauge climbs immediately To just to the left of the red zone. I can drive for another 10-20 minutes and it does not budge Into red. Nor does it come down when i get into town and slow down.
I have the right antifreeze in and it’s at the right mark in the reservoir when the rig is cold.
I’ve taken temp readings of various points on the motor and all seems in the normal range.
Bad thermostat?
Bad temp sending unit?
Bad gauge?
