Seeking knowledge regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the TD5 vs 300TDI engines.

(I posted in wrong category and cant change) Seeking knowledge regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the TD5 vs 300TDI engines.

Since the 1999 models (and soon the 2000)
Defender 90, 110 and 130 are importable to USA. I would like to know everyone's thoughts regarding these two engines compared.

Thanks.

Should add that a TD5 will also be a bit smoother and accelerate better once at speed. It was all about making the road driving experience a little better.

I should add mine is the last generation of the td5, my understanding is the early ones had a few issues that are common but I have never experienced one issue, knock on wood

TD5 is awesome. Its quiet and has modern car power, where the 300 Tdi is loud and generally underpowered. The key advantage of the 300 Tdi is that it is such a simple motor, but that doesn't mean they're immune to problems. The TD5 is drive by wire, so while having modern car power, its also modern car complex.

Stock v stock, it seems like a lot of extra complexity for only 9 extra HP and 26 ft lb. The few I've driven were better road vehicles, but didn't quite seem modern when a 2.5l engine now outputs 200 hp and 250+ ft lb. Haven't driven a tuned TD5, but have no doubt that could take it into "modern" territory.

A tuned 300tdi can take you most anywhere without the electronic related drama. If I were in a remote location or extended road tripping- I’d be staying with the slower but reliable tdi. As the TD5 gain more traction stateside, the prices may fall slightly on the tdi stuff which is a
Bonus for many of us.

One thing to know is early TD5 engines (like the ones coming into the US now) are prone to head gasket failure due to plastic locating dowels deteriorating overtime. Other than that the TD5 is a "better" engine for most. I can justify several reasons for either engine.

Having owned both for many years as daily drivers (300tdi for over a decade and a Td5 for a decade now) I can say, without hesitation, that the Td5 is as reliable if not more reliable than a 300. The Td5 is far more refined and smoother all round. It can be modified to provide almost double its factory HP output. The 300 Tdi has as many known issues as the Td5. primarily its all due to poor maintenance and or abused examples.

My 300 had a head gasket blow at 120,000, but it was expected. My Td5 has been flawless for 120,000 since I’ve owned it. It needed a started solenoid rebuild, and a water pump in that time. The 300 needed a head gasket, timing belt kit, vacuum pump, starter and a new turbo in the time I owned it.

Bottom line is know what you are getting into and be prepared to sort the motor you choose. A well sorted Td5 will easily run for 400,000 without major issues. The Td5 bad rep and poor reliability rep was due to its early run 10P motors and cracked cylinder heads in the injector casting areas as well as oil pump bolts which left the factory without loctite on the threads. These major failure issues were all mostly sorted under warranty. Lastly there is the perceived issue of electronic injection in the Td5 compared to mechanical injection on the 300 and it is bullet proof in my experience and not a justified supposed weak point.

Reality in my experience is that the Td5 is as simple and easy to work on as the 300 Tdi and easily as reliable. Go for a Td5... or don’t 🤷‍♂️

Good luck 👍🏻

Couldn't have explained it better myself. 10 years of owning and daily driving an early model TD5. Replaced the head as to be expected due to the gasket/dowel issue, if I recall that was around 90,000 miles. Adding a tune to the engine was easy, and a big eye opener to the possibilities. More power, and better fuel economy, what's not to love?

I keep toying with the idea of selling my 110 and going to a Puma, but from everything I hear, the TD5 is better than the 2 versions of the Puma engine as well.

Just my 10p worth of opinion as I have both in my own fleet currently - if I were after a Defender that would regularly see a variety of drivers in the household and be used mainly around town the Td5 will give the most car like driving experience requiring the least amount of revision of driving style from an average "modern car". The 300 is a truck engine, requires forethought and momentum when trying to keep up with traffic at speed and in the hills.

Sounds more like 15p worth of option IMO
