Remove IP and Timing belt labor time

I'm curious what the average labor time would be to remove the IP, replace the timing belt, and reinstall the IP. My IP needs service and I'd like to change the timing belt for piece of mind.

Doing it myself with the proper tools I'd say probably take about 2 hours to remove and replace. Less if you have an electric fan and the crank pulley isn't seized on.

Also keep in mind, if you have never changed it you may have the old versions of the timing belt gears that should be replaced with the type with the lip.

I will be the odd man out here. I can't imagine any shop charging $200 (2 hours) or less to R&R timing belt.

You need to remove coolant hoses, drain coolant, remove water pump, remove accessory belts, remove timing cover, lock timing in, remove pump, reinstall, bleed system yadda yadda.

I would expect 5-6 hours.

I had no idea about that. On a 200TDI they did this with what the crank sprocket? I am def still running original gears.

Yep the crank. Old type has no lip on both sides, updated type does.

Edit: I'd also keep an eye under the inspection plate, you can look in there. If you see tons of black rubber fuzziness thr belt is starting to slip off the gears. Ask me how I know

Generic shop time, I'd def agree with the bump. But on the 300 a coolant drop isn't required if you are careful

So 2 hours for the timing belt?

How many hours to remove the IP to send it out for service? I'm going to assume it would be the same time to install the IP.

Thanks,
Alex

You need a special holding tool to remove the ip without removing/disassembling the timing belt. I happen to have the tool set, if you are near you can borrow it. It's about $70 from China or 199 from rovers North (same set)

If you find a shop that can do all that in 2 hours, good luck. It's pretty hard to access with the rad in place.

Even getting the fan shroud off without pulling the top hose is a bit tricky.

Use of the various special tools and whatnot is also compicated by having the rad there.

Bet most techs can do the job faster with the rad out than with it in place. Especially if anything needs renewed inside the timing case. i.e, seals, etc.

Alignment with the marks will also be easier with a straight-on view.

Brian brings the real experience here as I'm sure he's done quite a few of them. Guess it is faster working off a lift and not scurrying in and out from under the truck. And, the usual wrench-monkey muscle-memory of shit you've done countless times.

But, for the IP swap AND timing belt? In 1-2 hours? That's impressive.

My local guy did timing belt in 2 hrs with all the correct tools. I would expect that an extra 2 hrs for IP would be safe. I gave my shop 4-5 to do timing belt, oil change, fuel filter change and general overall inspection of brakes and all hoses and lines and he finished in 5 with no trouble. His hourly rate (well under $100) is very good for area so I never pressure him on time.

Just to be clear I said about 2 hours myself with my tools at home. I'd agree that a shop would be more time

On a 200tdi you are correct, on the 300tdi no need to drain coolant or remove the water pump.

Without complications (seized fan clutch, or some other nonsense) I can have the IP out of the truck in 30 minutes, and another hour to put it all back.

The process is:
Fan shroud off, fan off, belt off (just the one with a spring tensioner), crank pulley off, cover off (12 bolts), lock IP, tensioner and timing belt off, IP removed (12 nuts/bolts), IP replaced, timing belt and tensioner mounted, timing set, crank pulley on, cover on (12 bolts @25nm), fan on, belt on, shroud on.

First time you should expect everything to take twice as long, and the job is always easier with a clean truck and pneumatic tools that fit into the working space.
