Parking brake sticking

I have the older style parking brake that has the rod/piston actuator. It has been working perfectly, but I pulled a little to hard in my haste the other day and heard a small pop. It then went all the way up. When I release the hand brake it doesn't seem to let completely go. I have now taken the prop shaft off. Took the cover off and inspected the inside. Springs are not broken. The piston seems to work but when I pull the brake it expands the shoes. But when I release it doesn't go all the way back. I have to push it from the other side at the shaft. Has that part broken. Or am I missing a spring where the parking cable attaches at the rod. I put it all back together tried it but it's dragging. Remember I'm not a mechanic just a guy trying to fix his own defender one part at a time:). Please help #stumped.

I'm assuming you mean part # aeu2734 is not returning to the collapsed state when the cable is released.

It's probably just gummed up with shit. You can remove it and the expander pistons, clean them, grease them and reassemble.

No. It's fell out of the drum that I saw. I was working hard to get the drum off so i can say 100%.

I will just order that piston part and replace it for good measure. Thanks for the part nimber

Don't just throw money at it. Diagnose it. It is a simple mechanism and probably just needs to be greased

Unless something is physically broken in there, the parking brake components can benefit from a deep cleaning.

The expander mechanism can have the rollers bound or only actuating on one side due to a build up of hardened grease and dust. The adjusters can also be bound due to buildup. Remove all the internal and external components (look at the manual or exploded diagram to keep track of what goes where) - soak them in a heated degreased and clean liberally with a toothbrush first, and then a soft wire brush (brass, copper, or other soft metal) - once clean reassemble with good grease and adjust for operation.

Do check the condition of the cable and pivot points for wear before reassembly.

The only reason that I was thinking of purchasing a new part is that I believe there is a spring of some sort in that plunger. Can't find a good diagram of it, but the one I did find showed some type of clip. I did hear/feel a slight pop when I "over extended" the brake handle. The cable seems to work the brake still works when I out it back together. Just doesn't want to release all the way. The piston is not fully coming back. I slipped some grease in it and got it moving a bit. Also lubricated all the hinge action pieces coming from the cable to the plunger shaft. Im all about rebuilding things. But the amount of work to take the whole thing apart to remove the plunger would be frustrating if the rebuild didn't work and it all had to come apart again. It's at the house in a safe place thankfully not on the side of the road so I can rebuild it properly. The brake shoe adjuster seems to work good. Just was making sure there wasn't a spring of some sort by by the hing mechanism right before the plunger outside the housing that has popped off. I dont have any good pics to see what should be there. Thank you guys for all your help
