OM605 - Anyone?

Currently workshopping an OM605 or OM606 for my 130. This is just all on paper, as I my 300 is fine but I am fascinated with the merc diesels and the potential for whatever power you want. Id honestly likely run stock which still tops the 300 on either, but have worked through pricing for the 606 and all parts, and feel that the 605 could be beneficial in that it's shorter, a bit lighter, and would allow for more room. If most of the 605 parts match up, then not really change in cost...

Anyone know of, or have installed a 605 in a Defender?

Thanks

I have been researching all repower options, but ECU free is still the most enticing...

I saw the full M57 kit from MW, but haven't looked much into sourcing the engine...Def not a bad option...

You can't go wrong with either engine. There is plenty of room with the 606 in the engine bay.

I'm RHD and will be using an MOD AC setup, what does that rear right side look like for room? (by your brake setup)

Just take a look at this. The 605 would be my preference, particularly for space and that sound(Audi S2 type thing). That build was plagued with weird laziness(from several suppliers and the series 1 parts having no space) but the motor build and application as well as tune itself is pure genius and the parts are plentiful.

I am trying to find what parts I cannot get for OM605 for the swap. OM606 is better documented and has 100% available parts...DPUK told me to use a 606, but maybe based on part availability.

Interesting. They do produce and sell parts for the 605, forged and not. Either motor would be a huge plus.

Between the two, the 606 has more mod/power potential, but the 605 is more simple if that’s what you are going for.

it works for me by the numbers, and the cost is close to the 606, which some oddities on parts...but most are the same. Easy jump to 200HP+ with the hybrid turbo upgrade, which is more than enough. I know the 300 can do the same...but whats the fun in that.

Went with the 606 myself. K2 and DPUK are your best sources for conversion parts. Plenty of sources here in the US for general OM60X parts. As far as weight, I believe the 606 was only a few pounds more than the 2.5TD I replaced it with. Pretty much a wash if I remember right. Unlike a lot of you on this board however, I paid people much smarter than I to do the bulk of this transplant. Still a few kinks to work out but its been a solid choice. Left it sitting for 6mo all winter and fired right up. My mechanic who works on Defenders (think he's on this board?) had mine in his shop along with another D90 that had the Cummins R2.8. He said the OM606 was way more fun to drive.
