OK, thanks. I was unsure of using the rubber hose because of the length being a bit short, and too stiff to allow the assembly to move up and down. Cutting the old off is no problem, though, if that’s the case.

There was no screen/bag/filter in the box I got.

patience and care, also once installed and in place the pump does not move thus the length of hose is not as detrimental as one would think. I may be wrong, last time I replaced a pump was some 10 years ago.

Some replacement pumps come without it.
You can reuse the old one - I did it (I think) more than once. Be careful pulling the old one off the pump motor body - you need to twist/finesse it off if you want to keep it.

Yeah, I got the screen off, and onto the new pump. My problem now is that because the hose is inflexible, the assembly won't go back into the tank, it bumps against the bottom of the tank before I can push the top of it down onto the seal. Should I be using an extra long hose to provide a "loop" for flexibility? Or should I use a shorter hose and let the pump hover above the bottom of the bowl? But this means it will not fit in the slot on the bottom of the bowl as seems to be what it wants to do.

Shorten up the hose.
Maybe I'll dig up a rebuilt fuel pump I have sitting somewhere and take some photos.

I shortened the hose and got it in yesterday afternoon. After a few start cycles, and then sitting overnight, and after listening to the old pump vs. the new, I'm sure that fixed the start issue. It's only been one day, but it is starting as normal now.

However, the 1316 random miss-fire code has popped up again! I'm going to clear it and give it one more try, since the filter and pump have both been changed, just to make sure it isn't caused by excess air in the pipes. Then I'll see about addressing that issue.

If you haven’t already done it, start it up in the pitch dark with an open bonnet if you want to rule out plugs or coil packs. If you see a lightning show through your plug wires you’ll be able to isolate any bad coils. That solved my misfire code.

The fuel pump replacement certainly fixed the odd starting issue. In fact, I drove it today after having it sit for a week, and it started instantly.

I’m pretty sure it also fixed the misfire issue. The light came on the day after we got it running, but I reset it one last time... and it has now gone about 500 miles without any more misfire.

....now if I could only have tightened the fuel tank sealing ring better....
