Knob rattle

My shift knob was attached to lever by PO with some sort of black gunk that allows it to easily rotate as well as rattle. What is the factory method (or any of your better methods) for attaching the knob to the lever? I could just epoxy it on, but I want it to be removable in case I need to remove the tunnel cover.

Usually there's a rubber sleeve inside the knob that threads over the shift lever. Most of them deteriorate over the years and turn into that black goop you have currently. As cheap as the knobs are I typically just replace the entire assembly, but I'm sure you could find a piece of rubber tubing that would work as a replacement.

I ended up just buying a new one. How did you replace it? I'm finding that the shaft seems too large for the new knob. I beat on it with a mallet and still no luck getting it to seat. Is there something on the shaft or inside the knob I'm supposed to remove?

I haven't done it in my current truck but I replaced the knob in my old 90 with one that was leather wrapped and had a allen key screw that had a point in the end that "dug" into the shifter stick to hold it in place. It was a random kit I bought of ebayUK while living in the UK. I'll try to find it.

It threads on...

Sounds like the remnants of the old knob's threaded insert is still on the shaft. I'm going to guess the mallet did not help the new threaded insert.

Post a pic.

Resurrecting an old thread here just to put it to bed.

I must have ordered the incorrect knob, because the rubber insert was much too small for the threaded end of the rod. It didn't seem pliable enough to be designed to force it on the threaded rod. A quick hit on the drill press took care of that issue and now all is well.

Shiny knob with the schmutz is the old one. Clean one with the smaller insert is the new one before it's visit to the DP.
