Heater Fan Replacement

Looking to replace the heater fan in my truck. There is a fairly extensive wright up on another board but no one talks about the small silver box thats attached to it. See attached picture. It appears that people are using a Delco PM136 and modify it slightly by making it wire grounded in lieu of chassis ground.
Does anyone know if the silver box is needed or not? Has anyone done this and can share some info?

Thx,

Dave thanks for responding, yes that is the unit that they are using. I'm not sure about the rheostat portion and whether or not it's necessary.

Alernate part numbers

Great timing for this post. Over the next month I'm going to fix and/or upgrade my heating system. I made it all winter long without heating but now that the weather is good I can work outside and fix it.
So far I know I need to replace the Heater Matrix straight pipe LHD unit and the next part for sure is the blower motor.
Since I'm a cheap person I'm always looking for cheap replacement parts or alternate parts that can be more easily sourced.
Does the other site write up list alternate part numbers for other parts?
Looks like it's time for me to do a search.
Thanks again for starting this post.
