Heat Soak

I'm experiencing what I think is a heat soak related issue. 2.8 tdi, replaced the starter/solenoid twice, replaced the battery cable. Starter solenoid attempts to activate (single click) when ignition is engaged. But I get no starter action. This happens very randomly and only when the truck is warm after shut down. After a period of time, it restarts like nothing happened. Any suggestions? I've checked/redone connections at the solenoid.

Do a voltage drop test when it is happening. Put your volt meter on DC volts. Put the red lead on the block and the black lead on the negative battery terminal. If you see voltage when you are cranking you have a bad ground.

Thanks all, will try the drop. Checked grounds but will check again. I'm hearing and feeling the click at the starter solenoid when ignition is turned. Maybe the relay isn't putting out enough voltage?

Suggest you try running a ground strap from the starter body to the frame. I had a similar issue with my 300 Tdi years ago. Not sure why but it wanted a strap even though the motor had a very good one.
