All,

If you're like me and enjoy driving your Defender in the amazing deserts and mountains of the American West, please call your congressman and voice opposition to House Resolution 621, introduced by Rep. Chaffetz of Utah. This HR aims to sell off your BLM land to private landholders.

This HR cuts across party lines, as it stands to restrict access to all outdoorsmen, including hunters, fisherman, and four-wheel drive enthusiasts. If this passes, you can bet that public access to much of the land will be restricted.

If you are a Republican voter in a Republican-controlled district like me, it's especially important that you call your congressman today. Don't email, call. Tell them who you are and be sure to mention it if you supported them in their last election. Explain why you're opposed to the bill and urge them to vote against it.

Thanks.

It's a terrible bill, and I hope it doesn't get any traction. It makes no mention of what lands would be sold, leaving it up to who? He also makes the assertion that more land will help "struggling rural America." I grew up in "struggling rural America" and our biggest need has been infrastructure, for the past 30 years.

Agreed, that justification is a load of crap. If you want to help struggling rural America, cut the grazing and timber fees and open up more land for lease. Selling this land off to private owners is going to totally fuck every small-time forester and rancher that depends on their BLM and NFS leases.

From REP Jason Chaffetz....

"I am withdrawing HR621. I'm a proud gun owner, hunter, and I love our public lands. The bill would have disposed of small parcels of lands Pres. Clinton identified as serving no public purpose, but groups I support and care about fear it sends the wrong message. The bill was originally introduced several years ago. I look forward to working with you. I hear you, and HR621 dies tomorrow."

I love it how Chaffetz tries to play it off in his Facebook/Instagram post like he's some big hunter and how he did it all for the hunting community. He would have sold this land off in a heartbeat if his hunting/fishing/4WD constituents hadn't called his ass out so quickly.

What a fucking phony.

I think the best part of this is that it all came under the guise of transferring federal control of land to the local states. The only reason to do that is to pass it off to corporations. But you'd never hear him say anything other than "Clinton said it was ok." He is going to try and do it again. But next time it will be slipped into a larger bill that has to pass. The only way to protect those lands is to remove them from the "devalued lands" list.
