Gold has historic and intrinsic store of value with multiple real life, applicable and legal uses. Very worst case a standard 24lb gold bar can be used to beat the intruders that try to rob you.

I heard once that the Aztecs didn't understand why the Spaniards got so excited about gold, since it was too soft to be good for anything. Iron was much better for making weaponry.
