Afternoon, Hope some ideas...Oil breather popped out while driving and when I pulled over and idled for a while engine sputtered twice then stopped to not start again. No dash lights for glow plug when starting, it turns over but never fires. Any thoughts? Thanks all

Based on the location of the oil breather hose, the other things in that spot are the fuel cut off solenoid, as well as fuel lines.

A 300tdi doesn't need glow plugs to start, unless it's cold. Sounds like it's not getting fuel

Cut off solenoid sounds like great place to dive into as thats the case, fuel is not flowing and could tell thats how it stopped running originally. Will check that out, thanks!

The actual breather popped off manifold, I have it screwed back in now. Will get more detailed pics later.

Fuel cut off solenoid would make sense as it sputtered twice before shutting down for good. Will snap more photos later we are having an arctic blast here right now. Thanks!

First want to say thanks to all those who replied. I'm in awe at how proactive and helpful folks are on this forum. It is my first time using and just so thankful to have found such like minded folks.
Second here are some pics. I have since reattached the oil breather and still needing to diagnose the reason fuel is not getting through to turn over the engine.
Thirdly! My 17 year old nephew and I just turned over a 1965 Series iia this past weekend that I rescued from the woods of Truro, Ma
Love such goals and milestones.

Time to rule out that fuel solenoid / wiring. Get a test light, meter, or probe and confirm you're getting signal at the valve. next wiggle the wire and see if signal changes. if you have no signal, bypass the wiring harness with a direct 12volt signal and see if it fires up. keep in mind you'll need to kill the 12 volt signal for the truck to stop.

You can also crack a line to your #1 injector and crank the motor. If you see fuel spitting out of the top of the injector fitting, you know your solenoid is open and your injector pump is spinning via the timing belt. If you’re a one-man show, set up your phone to record it while you crank it over. Place a rag or two around the injector line. It won’t be a lot of diesel, but it will keep the mess down.
