Land Rovers in Mongolia
We saw the one on the left on the road westbound between Dalandzadgad and Bulgan the other tricked out one in downtown Ulaanbataar (UB). Driving in downtown UB is insane with aggressive drivers.
We saw 4 other defenders in UB and another on the road westbound near Hovd.
There was a rolled D1 or D2 on the side if the road in Darvi
Overall there were many Range Rovers, a few LR3 and LR4's and a couple Evoque's in UB. Many G- Wagons, a few Jeeps and a few Hummers
Land Cruiser, the Russian UAZ 452 Van and UAZ 469 Hunter dominate the 4x4 market. Toyota, Hyundai and Kia the cars and Hyundai the small work trucks
From August 23 to Sept 14 we drove a 2009 Nissan Patrol DX diesel 5 speed 5000 km around Mongolia. The Patrol is very capable truck, however I did not like the long hood and front over hang when dropping into dry washes,streams/rivers or cresting steep hills.
It certainly didn't have the storage capability of a 110.
Road signs few to non-existent and in Cyrillic.
We encountered 3 Mongolian Rally cars. One driven by 3 Russians on the north route to UB between Tsagaannuur and Uureg Nurr (lake), the other was covered in fringe and was on the south route to UB near Altay and the third driven by Russians was a front wheel drive car and they were looking for a welder to weld the rear axle they had held together by lashing a piece of wood to it.
For those of you not familiar with the rally It begins in Prague and ends in the Siberian town of Ulan-Ude 400 miles north of Ulaanbataar. The cars engine must be 1.2 litres or less and the smaller, older and crappier the car the better
