The TD5 R380 has a different clutch release system, bellhousing, input shaft and so on. Maybe there is a way to make one work in the confines of a short bellhousing TDI gearbox, but if so, you need to first talk with a specialist, like I already suggested...... They will know if anything stock can work, but I doubt it. Even a normally aspirated 4BD1 will eat any TDI clutch for lunch.

Long bellhousing, puts the engine back up over the steering box. Short bell housing positions the engine perfectly.

Cutting up and welding a bell housing has been discussed and is how the couple guys who have bodged them together have done it. While something one would do on a personal vehicle, and could be done commercially on an exchange basis, Axis has ruled that out.

According to ashcroft's website for the stumpy R380, all you need is a special release bearing for the stumpy. Everything else swaps.

Found Black Diamond clutches

Found DriveTorque Clutches

They are all pretty similar in design. I'm planning to just use my standard HD clutch and see how it goes from there. Clutch isn't hard to swap.

Swaps to ?

Are you making your own adapter from the 2.8 to the r380 ?

From Clutch-Fix

Good morning Doug,

This is certainly something I can help with!

We have a 9 1/2" clutch rated to 414 ft/lbs and we have a 10 1/2" clutch rated to 550 ft/lbs. As far as I am aware, the R380 will take the 10 1/2" clutch and this will give you some play room for increases in power in the future.

Do you know what flywheel size you will be using?

Kind regards
Ben

I think Nick's transfercase adapter will work with the AX15 to the LT230

Yup - why I thought it was interesting. This might be a good option cost wise and spacing might be close as you would be eliminating an adapter on the bellhousing side.

Wondering how the guy can sell cast alum bellhousings for less than $1000. My understanding on setup costs for sand molds etc is they are extremely high.

Not so. I have no idea on costs of this particular adapter, but I am involved with sand casting for light pole decorative bases all the time with two of our stateside manufacturers and it is not that expensive. Take that overseas to a big plant and it?s downright cheap, although they say made in USA. Probably one adapter drilled for multiple configurations. Photos do appear photoshopped to this untrained eye on their site though...

Nicks adapter I would say is even more complicated and I would suspect smaller batch size and incorporates bearings and isn?t too far off that cost...

As you guys know we have been working with Chris and Kevin @ Axis to help in anyway we can in developing the 2.8 to R380 stumpy adapters. This is a blast email they sent out today to anyone looking to do that conversion. After digging deeper I think we may have found a way to do the custom cast bellhousings economically right here in Va of all places.

Cummins R2.8 Defender Update
All of you have express interest in the Cummins R2.8 to Defender Kits or Conversions. And we wanted to share an update with you all.

What we have found out the last couple of months, is that the steering box and oil cooler on the R2.8 occupy the same space. The solution to this issue is to get the R2.8 behind the box. That way no one is having to relocate the steering box and mess with the suspension geometry. Going this route we narrowed down the best possible transmission solutions for a manual and automatic trans.

Non Puma's
Manual - We are electing to use the upgraded Stumpy R380 as this will pull the R2.8 behind the steering box and the Transfer case (T/C) will land in the factory position. This solution will work for the D90,110 and 130.

Automatic - We are using the 8HP70 (8 Speed) from the Dodge Ram Trucks. With this transmission we have to slide the T/C back about 5.5" which may be an issue for the D90 guys, But we know it will work with the D110 and 130's.

Puma
For guys wanting to run the Puma Bulkhead, Floor, and Dash, the drive train is slightly different.
Manual - We have found that the Rover V8 R380 is a better solution for the Puma Layout, We can pull the Drive train back (4ish inches) till the shifter lines up with the Floor cutout and that lands the engine right where need it. Then we are going to build a custom T/C shifter mount that will relocate the T/C shifter next to the transmission shifter, just like in the puma.

Automatic - Will be the same solution as the Non Puma.

RHD vs LHD
We have seen some slight differences in the LHD and RHD configurations. The main difference is AC clearance. For a RHD defender you will be required to run our High Clearance Mega bracket if you are wanting to retain AC. For a LHD defender we can get away with using a Cummins Mega Bracket.

Hoods or Bonnets
We also paid close attention to the hood when we landed our engine placement. We wanted to make sure no matter what hood (Puma or not) that the engine would fit in there. As I know some guys love the look of the tire on the hood. We didn't want to force anyone into swap them out.
Also there should be some flexibility with the grille. As our cooling package sites back a little ways. So you should be able to fit a non bump out style if you like that look.

Below are some photos of what we have going on right now. By the end of this week we will have the engine landed in its final location in the D110/8HP70. As the builds progress I will keep you guys all updated.

Thanks
Kevin Silovich

What I am reading from that email:
1) Stumpy R380 $2400 (rebuilt, ashcroft)
2) High clearance mega bracket $1400 from axis industries (if you want AC on a RHD)
3) Adapter kit for R380 at least $2200 from axis (best guess based on their pricing)
4) Motor mounts $500 from axis (best guess based on their pricing)
5) R2.8 Engine $9000 landed (approximate with sales tax and the like)
6) bullshit, bobs, and everything else $3500 (going to need an intercooler/rad setup, likely some other modifications plus wiring ect to get everything to play nice together).

Did I miss anything? This isn't a critical post either, just trying to wrap my head around the potential cost for the swap.

1) Stumpy are custom built to order. None out there to rebuild- a little low on estimate with TNT/FEDEX shipping. Going forward may not need the special stumpy bellhousing that Ashcroft is having made if Axis is going to have bellhousings cast, so may lower the cost of the trans a good bit.
2)Don't believe the mega bracket is necessary when entire engine is behind steering box/stumpy position- that is needed with the 8 speed auto setup that pushes the engine forward. Have a rhd truck here with a/c so going to be the one to break those rocks and find out.
3) price is a moving target on this- may be less.
4 way high here- think they were $150
6) a tad light, shipping is around $300 and then whatever your states sales tax is
6) pretty much spot on with custom pressure hoses, rad, intercooler, steering fittings etc.

Going to see how these next three go but going to assume a new steering box is needed going forward. The cummins PS pump puts out pressure akin to other makes. The first truck we did we used an owner supplied nice dry d1 box. After a couple hours run time it leaked pretty good. Assist on the steering is much greater which is a welcome change.
