Cummins Repower ISF 2.8 for Defenders

Doug, it feels like you are like Steve Nichols fitting the Honda RA168-E in a McLaren MP 4/4. But instead of getting the fastest Defender you are getting the strongest one. BRAVO. Can't wait to see how you keep writing history.

Application is the Cummins 2.8. Had these custom made. They sit in the standard defender frame mounts with pins into the bushings. The trans cooler is a knock off of the 97 NAS 90 cooler but we had it made with AN fittings. Will use this cooler for the 6l80e. What you are seeing is a full width intercooler with necks on either side of the radiator to line up with the turbo output neck and intake manifold on the other side.
The radiator with necks made to line up with the thermostat housing and waterpump on the other side. Radiator has an electric puller fan and thermal switch for fan is made into tank of radiator.

After reading this and seeing the picture all I can say is wow!

I've been messing with my radiator/IC/Oil cooler on my OM617 off and on for a long while. Something like this with AN fittings and full width seems like it would work with multiple conversions not just the Cummins R2.8. I'd hate to ask the price tag on that but any ballpark figures?

The cummins has the turbo on one side and the intake on the other. Because of this the inlet/ outlet need to be on either side of the raiator or there needs to be some really hokey plumbing. Decided to go this route where the instercooler nests to the radiator.

I am excited to see how the 2.8 builds turn out. Getting ready to return back to the States soon with my ROW 110 and hopefully start my restoration project within a year or two. Big thanks to everyone paving the way!

Doug, I hope you open a retail side biz on this. I think this engine is going to take off like the LS did and you deserve to capitalize on the pioneering work you are doing.

Really curious to see how this conversion turns out and what the driveability is vs 200/300. Does anyone have a runner yet?

Love to be able to concentrate/capitalize on conversions, especially after the head scratching we've gone through.

We are close too. That said, i thought id be rolling by now so who knows. Lots of little things on this deal. Radiator mounts, motor mounts, re routing all the fuel lines, etc . We had to relocate the little oil cooler and the steering box made things tight too.

We did a custom dual evaporator setup with vintage air package at the same time so sorting a custom AC system was a time killer too.

Second time would be faster for sure.

Swapping wiring harness out next with new dash makeover.

so has anyone worked out gearbox tunnel covers yet? curious if manual boxes will need something custom, or if any existing Defender models work

Dave Ashcroft confirmed for me today that a late suffix (K/L) R380 with his HD rear support bearings should be fine for the R2.8.
Now that is even better news than the adapter kit axis is making...
I had my r380 built up the HD bridge.. and it?s a late suffix as well.

Red not sure what to say there -

What are the 2 builds using for radiators and Intercoolers? - just looking at some possible configs the TD5 Allisport XL radiator and full width intercooler look like they could fit behind a non-A/C NAS grill...

humm.. really interested in this as a possible solution to my 180k miles/lack of towing power issues

The v8 runs great... torque and range are what I am after ultimately. Also something that requires less unobtanium to maintain... try finding a new 14cux TPS..

Power and torque are really not any different (182 hp / 232 lb-ft versus 161 hp / 267 lb-ft). Chuck a cam and proper timing chain in the V8 and you will kill the diesel. I just think you will burn a lot of money and time and not be any further ahead. You want an LS.

Personally, I've never seen any problems sourcing any parts. Easy enough to throw away the Lucas fuel injection, if it bothers you.
