A sedimenter has an inverted funnel shaped cone at the top,
The fuel enters at the center and is pushed down to the bottom where it leaves 99.99% of water and particulate.
The fuel exits through a small gap between the inverted cone and housing.
This fuel current works better than anything else.

When will you guys learn to use a real sedimenter?

We had a Mercedes 300TD that would run about 2 miles before the filter would clog with very fine brown particulate.
After no less than 10 fuel filter changes by the side of the road, installed a sedimenter and a 12V fuel pump.
Then drove it trouble free for 6 monts and sold it.
Before the new owner picked it up decided to check the filter and it looked brand new.
Looked in the sedimenter and it was almost full of brown particulate that was as fine as talcum powder and looked like light brown brownie mix before going in the oven.
Cleaned it out.
Ran into someone driving it about 5 or 6 years later and apparently a new owner,
The lady said she loved it and drove it every day without issue.

I'll bet you if you put a sedimenter after that fuel pump filter thing, it would trap a bunch of particulate.

Is that not backwards? Are the not inclined plate separators?

No. The old way was fuel forced from the top around the sides.
The top cavity fills up to soon and the unit stops working.
The correct routing is down the center and around the sides where the captured material goes to the very bottom.
