Cummins Repower ISF 2.8 for Defenders

Honestly why are these better than an LS?

I dont intend to get off topic but I can appreciate the early Rover diesels for simplicity. This engine has an ECU sensors etc. The LS family of engines has more power similar fuel economy tons of aftermarket support and is tried and true...

You seriously think you’re going to get similar mileage from an LS motor as the R2.8? Not likely. I got 24 mpg with my 200tdi. With my 5.3, I think like 13.

I can appreciate the simplicity of the Rover diesel, but how is having electronics and sensors going to complicate things for you with the 2.8? All I can think of is that you won’t have to do valve adjustments.

I can't wait to see a video shot from inside a 110 with one of these motors. Will they be quieter than the theee hundy? Surely they will be smoother, right?

I think that's really the only thing I hate about my truck: it's so loud and rough.

Bruh, you have a soft top with no insulation. Get a friggin' hard top with some dynamat and report back.

Got to talking about “gliders” with a trucking client if mine.

Cummins engine’s in the truck market come with a three year 300k warranty. Cummins needs to do better on to get my $$

The all-new R2.8 Turbo Diesel crate engine package has been on sale for just over two months now and Cummins Repower has been shipping engines all over the U.S. and Canada for projects ranging from simple repowers for daily drivers and iconic 4x4s to custom installations into wild, retro RVs.

We?ve done our best to take the guess work out of an engine swap. No other new production crate engine comes as complete and ready to run as the R2.8 Turbo Diesel. Cummins Repower provides everything from the front-end accessory drive to the digital dash display and the throttle pedal. Each crate engine we deliver matches the exacting specifications developed by Cummins and our BETA test customers, who punished the R2.8 Turbo Diesel in testing across multiple vehicle platforms.

Not all engines are crated equally. When critical components such as fuel pumps, filters, accessories, starters, and flywheels aren?t included in an engine package, you have to piece together these components from various manufacturers, hoping for the best. For the vehicle specific components not included with our R2.8 Turbo Diesel, such as motor mounts and cooling packages, we help you by including the most thorough installation guide and owner?s toolkit available in the crate market, as well as on-call support from 1-800-CUMMINS. A team of dedicated enthusiasts is standing by to help.

We hope you choose the reliability of a complete Cummins Repower crate engine package for whatever your project might be. To show our appreciation for your interest, we are excited to offer free shipping on all crate engines through the end of the year. </td></tr></tbody></table>

Exactly, as a manufacturer, how can you offer a soup to nuts warranty when you have no control over wiring, or cooling system, or exhaust system designs for example ?

We were told warranty period would be based on inspection by local cummins dealer. It's a Cummins, and an engine that they have thousands of in service across a multitude of platforms, very low risk proposition.

Dave Ashcroft confirmed for me today that a late suffix (K/L) R380 with his HD rear support bearings should be fine for the R2.8.

Long awaited radiator, intercooler and trans coolers finally showed up. Now to get it plumbed up.

The Leyland (Lt) and Rover (R380) transmissions aren't great gear boxes, we tolerate them. I don't get having an r380 built up for one of these conversions when for similar money the world is your oyster. Mating the 2.8 to a v8 zf autobox won't work unless you change the torque converter and internal governor to the ones used behind the BMW 5 cyl diesel and then again the question, why.

Doug, I'm just posting info and waiting for real world experience from the different power train combo's in development to direct my next build.

So who did you get the radiator and intercooler from? And what application is that for?

From that photo perspective, it looks like your building a Kenworth semi! Is it bigger then the standard TDI radiator?

Application is the Cummins 2.8. Had these custom made. They sit in the standard defender frame mounts with pins into the bushings. The trans cooler is a knock off of the 97 NAS 90 cooler but we had it made with AN fittings. Will use this cooler for the 6l80e. What you are seeing is a full width intercooler with necks on either side of the radiator to line up with the turbo output neck and intake manifold on the other side.
The radiator with necks made to line up with the thermostat housing and waterpump on the other side. Radiator has an electric puller fan and thermal switch for fan is made into tank of radiator.

Damn, I think you are creating the Gold Standard for this conversion type.
