Safari HP got back to me this morning and I am passing due to the lack of controller. I'm about 75% sure it's workable with a replacement controller, but the cheapest I saw was the non-digital twist knob for $68 on ebay. It would be great for parts or backup for someone that already has a controller.

I have been thinking about this unit.
Am not sure if this could be controlled by a simple HVAC household thermostat and a relay.
Am of the opinion that the start-up and shut down cycle might need to be cycled by a controller otherwise there could be issues, but haven't looked for any online instructions.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

As I understand it, the basic thermostat is nothing more than a simple switch. There is nothing fancy. The computer is all onboard, just like the coolant heaters. You can hook up a laptop to program and troubleshoot.
