Fan removal

I need to remove the fan on the 300tdi. I have a spanner. Is there a trick? It just spins the pulleys/fan when I try. I'm turning it clockwise. I promise.

Also, when the motor is off should I be able to spin it in either direction by hand?

You need to jamb something in the belt and hit the wrench with a hammer. Usually that works. If not you need to get something to hold against the pulley bolts.

Long screwdriver or a pry bar work great.

This is what I use for the viscous fans. Works great and isn't as expensive as a professional grade one. I have modified one end and use it on my Toyota LC as well to spin the hub to make getting to the fan bolts easier.
The other tool there is to hold the pulley from spinning.

I read her the thread about converting a diesel to GM 292 and she let go of the fan with a wrench and whack of the hammer. Third attempt was a charm, if only she had been complaint before I destroyed the shroud.

Shock spanner and a fan wrench are the correct tools and make it a one min job

I bought a 32mm wrench at Northern Tool and made a "holder" from an old garage door opener arm...drilled an extra hole in the blasted thing...yup, that's how I "made" it

Easy peasy now.

the fan nut is reverse threaded.
