Wiring question

Ok, so I decided to forget about doing the calipers today until I can get vented rotors. I couldn't just leave well enough alone so I decided to install the new windshield washer nozzles (not sure who recommended the double sprayers but they are awesome!). while I had the dash pad off, I decided that today was the day I was going to make my new MPH speedo work and began to tear into the dash. I connected the speedo again and was about to test it in the driveway with the gauge cluster hanging and when I started it, the dash began to smoke with something shorting/burning badly. I shut it down and tracked it to the wire from the harness to the volt meter gauge, it completely melted (see pic). Question - Is this something I can buy or should I just reuse the ends and rebuild it. If rebuild, what gauge wire? Sorry for the long winded story but basically should have left the damn thing in the garage today!

Just make one with a pigtail from a old bullet turn signal and an insulated spade

Can't tell from here but I'd prob go with 12 or 14, whatever is close that what you have. Never hurts to move up in size.

Would probably be helpful to see why it nuked first ?

Thanks. I think it had a crack in the sheathing and hit something that was unshielded when the cluster was hanging.

I think that is a dash light pigtail and I think they may not be fused (depending on year) but some talking about wiring is about as effective as me talking personal relationship. :)
