Windshield replacement

I need recommendations for a windshield replacement in San Diego. windshield is janky. Seems to have a plastic film on it that scratches easy. Don't want to do it myself. Any good quality replacements that can be installed by Safelite or something similar.

And while it is off should I work on anything that's easy to get to without the windshield? Thanks in advance

I'd say that there's nothing specific that you could also do while doing the windshield. If you take it to Safelite they're going to turn you upside down and put you over the barrel backwards. I don't have a suggestion for you but I would call local hot rod shops to see who does vintage/custom glass. Get an Oem seal and replace that with the glass.

years ago for me it was actually cheaper for me to replace the entire windshield frame amd glass I got a new take off from rover's North than it was for me to just replace the glass. But I think those days are over?

Any decent auto glass shop can cut you new windscreen cheaper than you can buy one (At least here where I live). Had one cut and installed for $150. Also definitely put in a new seal 👍🏻

Thanks for the heads up on safelite...I figured it would be a racket. I realize windshields have safety film but the stuff on mine is a joke. It litterally scratches off and leaves patches. I changed out my rear view mirror and it fell off twice due to the film just peeling off. Had to cut out the film behind it.

Good idea on getting a new one cut. I'll check that out and order a seal. Thanks!

maybe you still have the protective film on it or clear UV tint that has failed? the plastic film is IN windshields not on it , its glass on both outer surfaces

Install glass vertically, not horizontally, to avoid stressing it over the length and cracking.

napalm...just blew my mind. If the guys at arkonik delivered a truck with the film still on it..I'd like to personally go out there and slap them behind the head. I've never seen glass scratch and to your point, the film is always inside which is why I was perplexed why it was scratching then noticed it has a film that peeled off. My fear is starting to peel it back only to find out that its not protective film but some cheapo windshield that now looks even worse. Right now you cant tell much but I can see where its scuffed and scratched. Anyone else know of a defender windshield that has any sort of plastic film on the inside of the windshield? Its not obvious. Not like the a protective film you get when you order new parts.

I should be able to razor the glass to clean it up. With this windshield you cant. I"ll see if I can take pics that turn out ok and show what I'm talking about. May be hard to show in a pic.

Thats exactly my concern. Its definitely under all the seals. I could cut it around the edge with a razor at least on the inside to peel it back. If it turns out to be a mess, I'll definitely have to remove the windshield. Right now its only bugging me. most dont notice...but my anxiety is building and knowing myself....I'll be driving and picking at it during traffic stops!

A local guy here quoted me $100 to remove my current windshield and re-install it(to replace the seal that wasn't installed correctly)

Where it peeled off behind the original mirror placement, scratches from someone likely at the car wash taking a sticker off the windshield and me trying to hide another peel spot near the rfid antenna...
