What's Your dB?

I have been wondering what type of noise others get in their cabs when driving, and although we can't have any kind of scientific study, I wonder if we might actually gather some kind of data just to see if it might be possible to tackle noise a bit more. For example, if several of you have quieter levels than what I have, I'd want to know some of what you've done to get it quiet. So here's what I think might give us a baseline.

Download the app NIOSH SLM for your iPhone. You can look at the info to see why I recommend this app. Don't mess with any of the settings, but start looking at the noise levels with the phone in a holder while driving, then report what you find here.

110, 300Tdi, standard exhaust, roof rack, 235/85 BFG KM2s @ 60mph flat with windows up = ~74 dB

I just tested the Series at 45-50 MPH with open side soft top and G90 tires = ~80 dB.

I like this idea. I wonder how my 97 with NRP compares to stock. Sometimes I love the NRP and other times I would prefer a quieter/stock setup.

Results of a very non scientific test I did a few years back:

A few thoughts.
Holding the phone in your hand results in lower numbers than having it in RAM mount.
Opening the BH vents adds to the noise level.
Also the Decibel app results in much higher numbers than the NIOSH app.
Who knows which one is better But at least we have them!

The NOSH app says it is calibrated for the phone as well as they can make it. Considering the publisher, I figured it might at least give more consistent results from one of us to the next.

I forgot about the dash vents. I don’t have those! So mine are closed.

- mine is a '97 ST.
It is very noisy.
I run either 285/75 BFG AT's (old ones) or 255/85 KM2 MTs

I have worn Bose 35 noise cancelling headphones on longer trips and they're great.

Get the app! I am curious about what others are experiencing. I’m doing a lot of noise abatement, and I think it is just barely working, but hard to know unless I have some comparison.

I think I will try the app.

FWIW, I have the Exmoor seatbox-floor-tunnel cover(1/2" thick rubber) and Eastwood heat/sound proofing in certain spots. Dynamat in doors.

I've had that APP for quite some time in my '97 NAS SW 300Tdi w/ Zf autobox, BFG AT/KO2's 235/85 16's
My reading is 83dB @ 65mph, held in my right hand while driving
