What Steering Box to Buy?

I need to replace my steering box. The leaks are getting bag enough where it is a steady drip when parked out of the input seal and the sector shaft seal. I've never replaced any seals in a steering box and I'm not ruling out that as an option. In the past I've had really bad luck with replacement steering boxes. I replaced 8 Genuine steering boxes on the same Discovery 2 at the dealership years ago before we bought one from Atlantic British. I've seen Merdian ones fail after a few weeks, as well as ones from auto parts stores such as Advanced Auto Parts. Looking at Atlantic British and Rovers North, the steering boxes have gotten really expensive $1200+. I don't want to buy one and have to keep replacing it for that amount of money. I'd also rather not spend that much on a steering box in general. I'm curious what everyone else's experiences are with aftermarket or Genuine steering boxes.

I'd also love to hear if anyone has had any luck replacing the seals. I suspect there is wear in the box which allows the shafts to move. Also worth noting that my truck spent a lot of time in the Northeast, so corrosion is a consideration when attempting to repair the existing box.

That's very strange to go through so many. Could something else be going on? Putting unnatural stress on them? Is It always the same point of failure?

This is my experience over the years of working on customer vehicles at the dealership. I've never had to replace my own box, but always figured if I needed one I would just go with used. They were just bad quality rebuilds from Land Rover and other vendors.

LHD or RHD?

LHD for a NAS D90

Jimmy forgive me if this advice seems elementary to you as a professional wrench. Blue devil trans magic fixed my leak in my 93 nas and has been dry ever since. I have never been one to try a quick fix but this one was seems to have helped many rover owners with the same symptoms. If you haven't tried it....worth a shot.

One of my coworkers just recommended using a stop-leak in the steering system. I've used the Lucas stuff before, but never had any luck. My leak is pretty bad at this point. Off road this weekend it was dripping down the frame rail and onto the exhaust.

The additive that I think Uncle Doug and also Trevor G recommend is the Blue Devil.

We couldn't keep the Lucas stuff (more of a syrup than anything else) in Treys 60k mile 1983 steering box. Added the Blue Devil Trans (not steering) stuff as an experiment before swapping out the box. That was 4-5 yrs ago. Haven't added fluid since. The blue devil stuff softens age hardened seals so they work again. If your bearings etc in the box are roached and the shafts are moving in the seals, nothing is going to work.

Can't speak to any other products, haven't needed to try them. :)

FWIW, when I built my project 90 2 years ago, I used the RRC steering box that I bought NEW from Rovers North in 2006. Put some Blue Devil in and no leaks.....yet.

Good info here. For reference, if you were to buy a new steering box for a LHD non-NAS defender. You could use a RRC, Disco, or Defender? Anyone have part numbers handy for when that day comes. Mine leaks, but not enough to get all nuts about it yet.

I've long since given up on Meridian - despite them being conveniently close in San Diego. It has been about 2 good out of 3 a decade ago, now it's 1 out of 4, give or take. I think they simply slap new seals without even looking at the worn spots on the shafts.

Jimmy, if you want to invest some effort into a P38A or GM p/s box conversion, I could pitch in.

NAS has nothing to do with steering. RRC, D1, and Defenders use the same box except for early defenders with the 3 and 6 bolt tops. Those can be retrofit with later boxes.
What varies between the models is the drop arms that the drag link attaches to.

Amazon has it cheaper.
