What have you done to your DEFENDER today?

i actually prefer the 2.8l turbo because it has Vband output

thats a good point, that glorified hose clamp is probably a lot easier to install and remove than studs that break when you think about removing them...

Measuring piston protrusion , right on for a 3 hole gasket.

I had to take a little bit off the block and then take some off the pistons to get me back in range. I'm at .66 to .7 mm depending on location and piston measured. I also skimmed the head just ever so slightly so I should be good to go.

That all seems so complex compared to my simple project!

Somewhere in the last 23 years, someone added diamond plate to the front wings. That was probably a good idea, but the installer was lazy, and put them on OVER the heater intake and unused heater intake cap. I couldn't bear it anymore, so yesterday I drilled out the rivets, removed the plate, cleaned the back of the plate and wing, pulled the cap/grate, and then reinstalled in the correct order. I thought about removing the diamond plate, but did not have a good plan for the ten rivet holes, and someone along the way stepped on the wings, so they were dented anyway. The plate is probably a good idea. While re-installing the port side, I replaced the cap with a snow cap.

On the list today is an oil change and lube... if I can find all the zerk fittings. I do have a new plug and gasket ring, and even though the ring is new I annealed it again anyway. First time I've done this on a Tdi 300. This will be fun.

Threw the front of the engine back on the 200tdi, tossed the battered, trash damper back on the crankshaft, and got her running! Right after the Calwood fire crested the hills that we see behind our house. Thought I’d have to move it or lose it (or at least wanted the choice).the winds were fierce. It’s road worthy... for a bit.... also worked on its replacement :)

Did the timing belt on the tdi going into the 110. It’s amazing how fast this job can go when the radiator etc is not in the way and you don’t have to drain the coolant etc.

This was a pretty straightforward job, no belt stretch or broken fasteners to make things difficult. I used the Bearmach kit this time. It had the same Dayco belt that everyone sells, the idlers were from INA in Slovakia and I’ve got no idea where the gasket came from but I didn’t like it. The little center gasket donut was adhesive backed (a nice touch) but the main gasket was just paper an didn’t have the sealing bead that the original has. I used some blue hylomar to add a little extra sealing effect.

Someone wrote 20-11-06 inside the timing cover, which would have likely been the build date. I’ve had the motor for 5 years and about 8k miles and have never done the belt. I’m thinking it’s probably original. There was some belt dust in the housing, but the belt looked pretty ok. I’m any case, it was past its useable life.

This is why I run my truck without coolant

I got the front timing case on. Thanks @Tomaco1 for the lock plate.

it turns out I'm missing a whole bunch of other parts too it looks like I sent some stuff out and it never came back. I guess that's what happens when it takes you to build two years to build a motor

I'm missing the two brackets that mount the pump to the engine. One also holds the accel cable . I may be able to the the nla one that holds the cable locally , the other is still available for about $15.

I didn't remove them when I had the pump calibrated with the 12mm head , ramp plate and plunger. Looks like they are gone .

And some other small things that the shelf fairies took . Lol I'll figure it out.
