Warn 8274 Value?

So I have a chance to pick up a used Warn 8274 winch...seller is asking $650. I haven't had a chance to see it in the flesh but the seller indicates that it is good working condition however the control box has cracked around where the remote plugs-in...the remote is plugged-in and permanently attached/sealed to the box via some sort of epoxy. Is it worth $650 with this defect assuming it operates as it should? Anything else I should be looking out for?

They are great winches and rebuildable. My biggest concern is water ingress and internal rust. It depends— but if it sounds and feels good during operation, then I’d probably get it.

Look good at the brake assembly. Its an integral part of the winches function and its exposed to the elements. I purchased one of CL for $300. The brake was rusted into a solid non-functioning part. But as others have said its easily rebuildable and a fun project. Its been a great winch since and I think they look the part when mounted on a Defender. Lots of parts available. I also needed a motor for it, got one off Ebay for cheap and worked well.

Thanks for the info. Hoping it's a decent specimen that doesn't require too much work.

So $600 ended up being the magic number. I wasn't able to test it but it appears in overall good condition except for crack control box cover and socket. Free spools smoothly. Manufacturer code JH1 and SN202041 indicates vintage 1981.

I bought mine for $500, added a Red winch motor and an Albright solenoid, new warn controller, and put master pull synthetic line on it. Still cheaper than new winch and much better. you should probably change the oil in in when/if you do the motor. bear in mind the ease of pulling is directly relational to how its mounted when on the truck..
Oh I mounted the solenoid to the motor, so no control box, I have a remote plug in in the engine bay (which will move to the headlight surround soon) Red winch and Gigglepin have everything you need for them (Giggle especially)

Thanks for the info. Was able to test operation over the weekend...operates as it should, love it! Got her opened up and everything looks good inside and operates smoothly. The free spool actuator will need a new detent ball but other than that it looks great mechanically. Pulled the motor and was pleasantly surprised to see the stator, commutator and brushes all to be excellent condition...probably still 75% brushes remaining. Control box works as it should, turns out the box cover was not cracked but the female socket had a broken ear. I'm a big fan of "If it ain't broke don't fix it"...most likely won't be doing any upgrades at this point but good info.
What is the preferred mounting position? The PO had it mounted on the back of a plow truck and mounted it feet down w/ the gear box pointed out straight rather than vertical. Also, how much synthetic line can be installed?

I have only seen them mounted straight up on Rovers. There are an array of generic mounting plates available online you can make fit your Rover that function well. I have a Hanson bracket on my 88 that I adapted to my bumper. The 8274 holds up to 150’ of cable or synthetic line.
Congratulations on the find!

Since on topic. How about an older pre -50 with non T handle spool lock. What is worst case scenario with brake kit refresh, motor, solenoids, and new synth line? I have a line on an older one, condition unknown but looks to be pre 1980, which is fine. just need to know if it's more worth finding something in a bit better shape.

Does it still have a free spool? Or is it an 8074?
If it is an 8274 but has a round style free spool knob in my mind they’re worth the same because they are just as serviceable and rebuildable. You can upgrade motors but may have to get an newer style pinion gear to match https://www.amazon.com/Warn-98380-G...d=1&keywords=warn+8274&qid=1586184030&sr=8-16

If it is an 8074, you can upgrade to a newer upper housing to accommodate free spool, but you’ll have to buy one.

If the brake needs to be rebuilt, the solenoids need to be replaced, and it needs motor rebuild/servicing, plus line, it all adds up very fast to $700-$1000 including initial purchase price. So if you can find one that’s already done in that range I think you’re doing very well.

it's an 8274 as far as I know. Round style knob, or what's left of it.

that's what i thought. price is right but after all that, can likely find one in better shape.

Rob,
I got one of the 8274s that went to casa de Briggs. I really like that bumper you built. How exactly did the Hanson bracket mount onto your bumper? Looks like bolted to top and then has those other pieces welded on to the basket angled and bolted to front side of the bumper. What else did you do to reinforce the bumper? Or is it all from scratch and thicker material?

The bumper is 2"x4" 3/16" wall box tubing. To attach the Hanson bracket to the bumper, I cut and welded some scrap angle iron (3/16" or 1/4") to the bottom of the bracket and used four grade-8 horizontal through bolts with large washers. Its a pretty stout attachment. That truck spends most of the year sitting outside, so with the through bolts I can remove the winch and throw it in the back of the truck to stay somewhat dryer.

Agreed. I'm looking at roughly $400 for just a brake rebuild/seal/bearing kit, replace broken socket, plus another couple hundred for new synthetic line so it didn't take long for the $600 winch to turn into a $1,200 winch.

Thanks. I've never seen one mounted horizontal so wasn't sure if I was missing something. Nice truck!

For line I’ve gotten great prices and service from Custom Splice: https://customsplice.com/collection...e-winch-rope-diamond-line?variant=31793796356

Occasionally Olympus Off Road has killer deals on synthetic line as well but they have the absolute worst customer experience I’ve ever dealt with bar none.

Rebuilding the brakes aren’t bad, mega bonus points if you can remove the brake discs without breaking one, that’s a great way to double your cost in an instant.
