Interestingly enough though is that the euro spec Ford Ranger with the 3.2 TDCI seems to use the same MT82 as the Euro Spec 2.2 TDCI. The 3.2 is rated at 346 lb/ft.

This is the reply I received back form Dave Ashcroft about the MT82.

Hi Rick,

Ford / Getrag don’t release any figures for the torque capacity of the MT82 but it would appear similar to the R380,

As you mention we upgrade 2 of the bearings that often fail on the R380 and although we are starting to see a pattern on MT82 failures we don’t have any upgrade options as yet, one common failure is the needle roller bearing that goes between the pinion and mainshaft, not easy to upgrade as you are restricted by the pinion wall thickness.

Having said that I think they would still give a good lifespan and no worse than an R380, in the UK its common to tune these to 450Nm and they still last OK,

Regards
Dave Ashcroft

Everything that I researched on the MT82 had a lot of early production issues of popping out of gear under heavy load, and lots of premature wear on vehicles set up for trailering or overlanding that were near or possibly over gross vehicle weight. I think it would be fine for a road/truck trail only rig but I'd worry about a serious crawler or overlander rig. I'm a super high reliability person though.

All the early issues tracked with the same mustang issues and seemed to be taken care of by same recalls. The rover trans, from memory, was made in a different factory from the mustang trans and didn't suffer most of the worse production issues that seemed to be production run related.
