Here is me towing my 109 with my LR3. Your 110 might be a bit heavier. This setup was about the maximum I would be comfortable towing with my LR3 over any kind of distance. Towed it from Asheville, NC back to Atlanta, GA.
Its easy with UHaul. Put in you are towing a 1993 Land Rover Defender 110. It'll jive with their system.
The Uhaul trailers are HEAVY AF (2800lbs, I believe). I basically cruised at 65 mph, drove defensively, and everything was good. I put the transmission in "sport" mode and left it. I think it was in 5th gear the entire time (LR3s have a 6 speed auto, for reference). Loading and strapping down was easy. I had procured extra 3" tie downs but didn't use them. I took air out of the front tires until they were small enough to wrap their front tire straps on. Worked just fine, I loaded up, then a few miles down the road, checked the straps again (they were loose), then checked again at the next stop. As a MPG reference, I typically get between 17-21 MPG in my LR3 empty (17 at 85mph, 21 at 70 mph, cruise). Towing, I got 12 MPG at 65 mph. I didn't set cruise but with the trailer, she might as well been.
Pretty much UHaul is your main option. I have heard of Penske offering local rentals but nothing one-way.
Looking at the specs of your 97 CTD, you definitely have more torque than my LR3 has. But the LR3 has more HP. So I suspect you'll be able to get up and get going. This is all assuming you haven't modified your 5.9...which you would literally be the THE ONLY person who hasn't (also I respect that). Your truck does have longer wheelbase than the LR3, so that helps with stability quite nicely.
Anyway, that is all I know.
