Tool Deals Thread

One other thing to think about on your new work bench it covering the top. I put a sheet of 20 gauge mild steel on the top of mine. Easy to clean, you can weld on it, and durable. Plus, oil spills actually help to clean the top.

Couldn't you just smelt down all the tools of old you just replaced as well as some rover axles and reclaim a top? ;)

You are not all that far off. :) I was thinking about using rusted out doors for the skins for an aluminium top or just pick up a broken appliance for sheet steel. For now, I am going to paint the OSB. I have also set it up so I can add more legs as I find more 4x4 scrap posts. I just cut to length and glue and screw into the slots. If I put all the legs I could fit, it would probably support a 1in steel top, but something like 1/4in would be what I would want. 3ft x 6ft will cost about $350 though.

I have a couple of 4'x8' sheets of aluminum diamond plate left over from my garage build. Mount it smooth size up and you're set. I could make you a deal...

Hmmm. Maybe @Angus

I don’t think we have met in person and you are local so at the very least a trip up seems in order. :) Edit: @WreckITFrank told me who you are and we have met, I just never met anyone named Angus. ;)

I need to get a bit of time away from work (other than tool deal shopping late at night) to go set it up and this will be hard because the floor is sloped for a drain so I have to shim it and I want to try to square it up with ratchet straps and bolt it to the floor (because I am evilfij and too much is never enough).

The other option I was thinking of was to pour a cement top and use the spare paver slates I have, but I don’t think that will be optimal for hitting with a hammer.

So there is no way anyone is going to believe this, but a piece of countertop on one corner and a 2x6 end on the other and ....

I did not make it to HF to get the 20 ton shop press (I need to go to Middletown as Newark does not have it) so the vise handle is still bent :(. It is also very clear that I need a vise stand (Amazon global accepted my order, but currently not in stock — the free shipping is killer because I got it on order for $263 and shipping would have been $164). As you can see from the Woodward Fab flyer, that is a steal of a price being that sticker is $729 (that would get me a whole Harbor Freight US General 56” tool box). It also shows how good of a deal the 180 was at $5XX and the 160 at $4XX.

I rarely take my own advice, but I have a thing for twins... I think it started in the fifth grade with Tiffany and Leah... Anyways...

I have a Husky 46" and was going to get another... Then I saw these two and fell in tool love... They are 26" wide and I can screw a top to both to combine...beauty is the flexibility of being able to move one from one garage to the other... It ended up $20 more than the comparable 46" Husky... And the textured murdered out paint looks pretty good.

BONUS: They have the same key code! #playingthelotterytonight

Stanley Sawhorses. I'd say this is a deal insofar as it's a good find for functionality at a low price option for lighter duty work. Home Despot actually has them as a "special buy" at 0% off for the pair..ha..but whadda ya want for thirty bucks?

Stanley 29 in. Folding Metal Sawhorse (2-Pack)

I had to call around to find one in stock as Middletown did not have one even though the website said they did (glad I called), but I was able to get the harbor freight 20 ton press on sale for $160 (normally $200) in Norristown (nice store, have 5 drawer toolcarts in stock but I was good as they were not on sale). Everything else in a 20 ton press was $400 plus.

All I can say is I have no idea how they sell it for that price. It’s like $1 a pound. Seems nice, went together easy, jack works, comes with arbor plates etc. even the welds did not look terrible.

I need to grab the vise from the other house to attempt to straighten the handle. Then I will try some bushings!

PS I used the stahlwille 1/2 ratchet and the back drag was so low, even on new bolts I did not have to hold them. It’s my favorite for assembly ... and don’t give me crap I don’t know how to use anything less than 1/2 ok ;) Come to think of it, the Stahlwille ratchet, 17mm wrench, 24mm wrench, and the Wera 6mm Allen key sticker for about what the press does ....

If you want to round out the set of Klein screwdrivers, you can get a bunch including nut drivers for $100 I know I felt compelled to do so ;)

If anyone wants the stupid magnetic 7 in 1 Klein nut driver I bought part number 32807MAG , let me know. If you want an all in one nut driver buy the Lenox.

Also, Klein iron worker pliers (the smaller head ones not 2000 series) are on sale for $33. I used mine today to unstick a zipper.
