Behold ... Excalibur.

The stahlwille flexible head 3/8th ratchet. misterworker shipped this pretty quickly. They are currently selling them for 46% off sticker (which for Stahlwille is excellent). This ended up being about $100 shipped.

There is also a coupon code for 5-7-10% at the top of the page, but I am not sure if it works for all things or not etc. however it does work on the ratchets (which are now out of stock). So it’s 5% off 100 euro, 7% off 200 euro and 10% off 500 euro. They may be less expensive than even amazon.de (which did not have the Stahlwille flexhead ratchets). They don’t seem to charge state sales tax either.

There is a bit of wiggle on the lock, but given it is Stahlwille, I have to imagine that is intentional. :) The push button release is nice and it moves easy and as I noted before, Stahlwille has the least backdrag and seems the finest made. Gedore is a tank, Hazet is a tank with very fine teeth, Stahlwille is like a Swiss watch for airplane work. Can’t wait to try it out.

I just ordered the 1/4 and 1/2 to complete the set (and used the 5% off) but it said they won’t be in stock for 15 working days. Which is fine by me. I should have ordered all three at once saved a bit on shipping and gotten 7% off. Oh well. It’s not like this has been cheap. Haha.

Here's the deal I need to find: brake parts cleaner. Back in the day, I loved the stuff in the black and gold cans that they sold at Advanced. They used to run great deals on it and I would stock up. I don't know if this is done anymore. I don't like that CDC brand or whatever it's called. Seems like cheaper brands work better. Anybody have any recommendation?

Hmmm, I typically use is the chlorinated CRC brake kleen (red trim can) the non-chlorinated stuff is crap (green trim can). I have used the Walmart stuff and it worked too. TRW/Lucas makes some, but I have never tried it. You could always upgrade to carbon ceramic brakes. ;)

I generally buy it where i'm buying other parts at the time, but also usually use the red CRC cans. The large ones are actually on sale now at Advanced Auto for $3.50 a can. Berkebile used to make my favorite brake clean and gum cutter but that changed some years ago. Napa store brand is not bad either.

Amazon drops off the CRC red for $4 a can if you are lazy like me. But I suppose since I get my parts off the internet, I am getting Brakekleen at the same place. :)

Thanks to guidance from @WreckITFrank my electrical bouquet of tools is almost complete (I am waiting on a PZ2 and Knipex cable knife from .de and I sort of want a set of VDE 250mm Knipex cobras but am waiting until I have enough for another .de order to get them). While I could have saved a few bucks had I know what I wanted when I started (for example, buy purchasing the biggest Wera insulated set and adding to that or maybe even buying one of the kits with screwdrivers and pliers, but as it stands, I have some duplicates of PH2 and 3.5 and 5.5 slotted (I ended up with two spare sets of those) so accounting for the duplicates it was probably a wash. I also unnecessarily bought the ideal screwdrivers ($15 for two and $6 for a little slotted so it was a good deal), but I did not need them as I ended up buying a set of Klein insulated slim line (two long one a #2 square and smallish slotted as well as the ubiquitous PH2 and regular sized slotted).

While shopping I also discovered the Knipex “forged wire strippers” 13-72-8 in comfort grip or 13-71-8 in normal handle (no VDE yet available). As pliers for house electric, I think the installation pliers are better, but for automotive work they seems like the path forward so I have a set of them in comfort grip on order for the box. They are really hard to find and everyone seems to be asking stupid money so I just put an order in with KCTool at $60 which should arrive in a week or two. Eventually they should drop to $50 on prime, but that is probably going to take a while until the authorized dealers catch up with the backlog of demand.

Of course none of this stuff is remotely necessary. I could do everything I need to do with a flathead and a set of pliers that both cuts and grips, but it was fun tracking things down.

I'm thinking that the brand I used to use was called Wearever, from Advanced.

This is interesting and looks like it might be a good deal: brake parts cleaner that doesn't come in an aerosol can. I guess you could put this in a spray bottle?

So back when at the dealer we used to get something like this. Some techs loved it (no propane smell) some hated it. $100 a gallon is insane. It’s $187 for five gallons of CRC on Amazon (I know you don’t like CRC but I bet there are other brands available). You don’t want to use a spray bottle because the spray will be weak (and it might eat the bottle). What you want is a pressurized sprayer. There are lots of manufacturers of them, but, of course, Hazet has one .... The 199-4

There are hand pump ones as well if you don’t want to use shop air. It’s funny because I used to have four types of brake cleaner because most techs had a preference. Before I got there they previous guy would just get whatever and whoever did not like it would complain so I just went around and asked them what they wanted and kept them all. It cost nothing more than just having one type as no more was used, but the techs were happy so I was happy (happy techs do more work so I would sell more parts).

$100 gallon may be pricey but I get the feeling that the auto store cans are far more pricey per ounce.

Right, but CRC is expensive stuff and is $30 a gallon. I am just saying I think you can do better than $100 a gallon for the stuff you want. Breaking it down, assuming the ounces in a can are the same, it’s 7 cans per gallon (133oz a gallon, 19oz in a can). So on that basis, CRC is a wash between cans and a gallon (can’t find other brands to do the math).

Occasionally you come across something that is (1) high quality, (2) a deal, (3) not that expensive (under $20), and (4) made in first world countries (not that Taiwan stuff or other places is bad, just it’s nice to see stuff made in US/Canada/Germany etc.

So bondhaus is USA made and compared to the Klein version of the torx I have, much nicer. And apparently the actual torx keys in the torx set are German made. I suppose you could get the $5 harbor freight specials, or spend $40-50 each for Wera sets of keys (which I have) but at $18 for three I was very happy with the quality and value of these. So much so that they went from travel kit to main box once I got them and I ordered a second set.

If anyone is looking for a long flex head 1/2in ratchet, .de has the Gedore 1993-u10xl for $121 (including VAT, minus shipping so it ends up being $108 plus $25 to ship if you buy it alone). One left, this is a high demand, hard to find tool (like the Knipex forged wire strippers).

Rated at 600nm and I know it has a center position to act as a breaker bar, not sure if that is 600nm. Given that it is 600mm long and a true flex head (not positions) it seems pretty cool to me and should go nice with the Stahlwille which is shorter and has a lock. $121 is spendy, but it’s a 1/3 less than elsewhere (just don’t ask what else’s I ordered to get to $1000 to minimize shipping costs). Was waiting for the Hazet version with 90 teeth, but this with 45 should be fine (and it’s built like a tank if it is like anything else from Gedore I have bought).

So the Hazet 13 euro screwdrivers arrived.
07F9CAA8-CD1B-416E-9861-4EAAC010739A.jpeg

for 13 euro I think they qualify as a tool deal.

I would certainly add them to any amazon.de order. They don’t have the striking cap or even a hole in the handle for another blade to help turn, but for a run of the mill screwdriver, I’m happy (inspected them but have not used them). I still think the Felo wood 5 piece set is the best deal going. I may pick up another one. They are basically all I use now (which is sort of sad given the number of screwdrivers I now own). I sent a set to a friend’s mother and she was thrilled (they are old house people). The advantage the Hazet set has is that it has the small slotted (for thing like thermostats etc). If you had no screwdrivers and needed the small slotted, there is a Wera small slotted for $2.40 on Amazon us to have one.

I need to figure out what to do with this set. Probably will throw it in the caste set.

For those that wish to buy American, in addition to Bondhaus (and the obvious like snap-on, Klein etc. although I ordered a Klein multi-bit screwdriver special thing type screwdriver that was made in China so maybe best to stick to the traditional Klein ones) does anyone have any experience with Mayhew brand? Apparently they are rebranded by the tool truck companies and the are US made in New England. I ordered one pry bar and I liked it, so I ordered a set and a set of lady feet pry bars.

While I fixed my old 20 gallon craftsman compressor, I am relocating it to the castle as I just don’t have the floor space for it at the other place. Does anyone have experience with the metabo “the tank” pancake air compressor? I could get it for less than the cost of a high torque dewalt 1/2in 20v impact and could run, in short bursts, things like an air hammer. I know @WreckITFrank wants me to get a giant scroll compressor, and I want one, but I would need to build a lean to and run power etc. plus I could use the metabo for nailing etc and it is portable.

Impressive specs for a small unit, but I'm also generally very skeptical of specs on inexpensive compressors. This one looks decent but is probably loud and awkward to carry around.

This one is small, quiet, and light. Good for airing up tires, blowing things out quickly, and running a nailer for small jobs. Less CFM and capacity though. https://www.amazon.com/Metabo-HPT-EC28M-Ultra-Quiet-Lightweight/dp/B07MGJ6R2L

I picked this one up a few years ago. Similar product. Quite pleased with it, but seems to be unavailable now.

Thanks. Ya, it’s loud, but apparently the Tank is the only small one you can actually run air tools on (for limited bursts).

I built a fence last summer with that tiny Bostich. No problems running the nailer/stapler. Would only last a few seconds running an impact or paint gun though. Depends how you see yourself using it. It's nice not needing to fire up the big compressor when I just need a quick burst for something.
