Tool Deals Thread

Those are stunning. I prefer the XL length probably 75% of the time.

My favorite, favorite set of wrenches are my 8-19 Snap On zero offset extra long box end wrenches:

Not a deal by any means but they are so sexy to use. Look at the leverage on that 13mm.

@acheck those are neat. I know I am a degenerate tool hoarder now, but I have to draw the line at snap-on (I have the snap on box with a single snap-on tool — the little pocket screwdriver some mechanic left behind). $345 for six wrenches ... ouch.

The snap on are longer. The 13/15 snap-on is 323mm whereas the 600LG is 245mm for 13mm and 270mm for 15. The 600LG 19mm is 335mm whereas the snap on 17/19 is 372mm.

The other similar thing I have seen is popular is the mountain brand long ratcheting wrenches. Also sold via snap-on as a rebrand. I am worried I would break them though (and I already have the Wera and Stahlwille ratcheting wrenches in addition to gearwrench).

So as not to bother everyone here with everything I get and review, this is my profile on Amazon (I thought the name was appropriate for anyone who knows me). I have just started, but I plan to keep doing them when I can’t sleep (which is often). Maybe it will slow down the tool buying but @WreckITFrank sent me a dewalt 1/2in high torque deal I am mulling and tells me I need a scroll compressor. I have a dozen reviews pending which should be posted soon.

I will keep the posts of the most interesting stuff (and best deals) in this thread. But if you want to know whether the Wera or Felo 12mm slotted screwdriver is better, you can see my reviews.

Prime is selling the 1/4 drive dewalt impact for $100 in a bag with a battery and charger. Being that it is my second favorite tool (behind my hammer and eeking out visegrips), I picked one up for the castle. Also picked up a metabo (German brand ;)) grinder in a case with 5 discs for $40 and a klein cross pein hammer for $30. The metabo is the cheap rebranded hitachi but it’s supposedly the best of the cheap grinders.

Metabo is Hitachi's new name, right?

Correct. The low end metabo are hitachi, some of the high end stuff is also hitachi too, but some is made in the fatherland.

From Wiki:

March 1, 2016 Metabo was acquired by Hitachi Koki, part of Hitachi Group.[5]

I ordered the grinder and it showed up in three hours. Good to know if your grinder fries while working. Seems nicer than the crap ones, but not like an 11 amp dewalt or something.

That’s a great video. If I could find an SAE Whitworth Stahlwille set like that I would buy it, just cause. :) That channel is really funny. Actually all these videos (mostly outside the US) where people save bent/Swiss cheese frames and bulkheads are fascinating to me.
View attachment 17809View attachment 17810The Hazet 600LG set showed up. They say “heavy duty” on them and they are very long. Definitely not cheap, but I got like 40% off sticker through global. I will say DHL is not like prime delivery. It’s signature required (or waive any claim for loss or damage), they sometimes don’t show up when they say they will, and reschedule delivery they take as a mere suggestion and show up when they want apparently. Supposedly a couple more are showing up “by 8pm” but being that they were here once and did not drop them off, it does not make much sense.
this is the hazet style i like. similar to the old merc and bmw tools

I have a Hitachi angle grinder that I have been using for years. It probably belongs in the Very Best thread. If it ever dies I'll replace it with another for sure.

And the hoarding continues.

After stalking the DHL guy for a few days, .de sent me a nice note saying that the entire shipping cost of my order was being refunded ... I did not even ask for that or complain. What seems to be happening is DHL says a package is out for delivery and the bring it the next day and a package gets added each day. So what I think is coming on day one, comes on day 2, what I think is coming on day 2 is hopefully coming today. So, to celebrate, I placed another .de order. Two, actually. The first order builds out the Hazet set for the castle (I was not able to squeeze another Hazet battery brush under the import fees deposit limit though :( ) and I am trying Heyco wrenches. The maxline is made in Germany and almost as expensive as Gedore, but the ones I got were less money. (oh, I got a full set of the Gedore six point pipe type wrenches as I liked the 10mm and 13mm I got off prime so much and a set of chrome Gedore cobra style pliers to compare with the Hazet and cobras). The offsets Heyco are made in Ireland and I believe the combination set is as well. Both sets go 6-32mm so for the price of under 100 euro I decided to take a flyer on them. The same sets in Stahlwille were 4x that. The Heyco on .de are about half MSRP.

So then I went back to my vise vice. As you may recall, the Heuer 180 model would not ship from .de. I saw a third party seller with the Heuer 160 model for an attractive price with 49 euro shipping to my location. I am fairly well convinced this is a mistake, but amex will always save me so I ordered it. One more left if anyone else is feeling spritely.

The Hazet 1/2 torque wrench kit and Stahlwille breaker bar showed up today as did my dewalt 1/4 hex impact for $100 and my $40 metabo grinder. They are nice, the dewalt is smaller than the one I already have. In theory, the remaining first .de order should be here today as well if DHL holds true to form.

I know pros like digital torque wrenches, but I don’t use them enough to keep batteries in them and I liked the 1/2in Hazet so much that ordered a Hazet 3/8 to match the 1/2 set I have (I wish there was a case set like for the 1/2in model).

EDIT: the torque wrench in my order was wrong as it was 1/2in so I went back and changed it to 3/8. Why Hazet would make a 10-60nm torque wrench in 1/2 is beyond me. Germans! The 3/8th cost a few euro more so I dropped the Gedore pliers and added back the battery brush and a bit driver to get back under the limit.

So can someone find a deal on a decent tool cart or box? I have a work bench in my basement I am going to haul up to the garage at the castle and I have the Hazet metal boxes, but I would like a cart or bigger box. I have heard good things about the US General Harbor Freight Series 2 5 drawer (and their other boxes) and I suppose I could wait for a sale (they go down to $189 usually, but I am not sure I would like a cart as much as a rolling box). Nothing too big (as I will just end up filling it) but something like a 42-72in model without a top box so I can work on top would be great. I thought about a Hazet assistent collapsible cart, but they are $840 delivered from toolID and for half that I can get a nice enough US style box which I will probably like better. And the prices on the Gedore/Hazet/Stahlwille boxes/carts are in the thousands plus shipping is going to be a nightmare.

@chris snell @acheck those are both very nice!

And I know this sounds wrong given everything I bought, but I am looking for a “deal” I mean I am considering harbor freight here. ;)

A harbor freight US General 44in is $499 before any sales. 72in is $1199. They have not had any sales recently, but they always come up. EDIT: 20% off coupon is available for in store. Looks like even the base inexpensive rollcabs is more money and it holds less weight and I can’t see it in person. Hmmm. Maybe I will stop by harbor freight and see them in the flesh. Does anyone have a US General box or cart?

Or maybe I should pick up a used snap-on or something locally ....

I’ve always been an advocate for used Snap On boxes, but the harbor freight boxes are actually pretty good. They aren’t very deep and the drawer lock is on the far right side of each drawer, but they are way nicer than any craftsman or hardware store box I’ve seen.

I have a US general four-drawer rolling box and it's great quality is good with the exception of the gas lift strut that holds up the top
