Those Troublesome Keys

1. To anyone who is going to have a vehicle shipped get an extra set of keys made, perhaps even 2 extra sets and have them handy.
Why? There have been 3 vehicles shipped here and 2 arrived without any keys.

2. British locks and keys have to be one of the most diverse aspects of owning a Defender.
Why? There is one key type for the ignition a different key for the front doors, a different key for the rear door, and yet another key for the locking fuel cap and typically all 4 keys are completely different. In fact they are so different that not one of them will fit into the lock of the others.

Last month, a NTO Puma rear door arrived and of course the key was missing.
Being use to the pre-puma rear door locks using the keys that are shorter, about half the length of an ignition key, couldn't find a key to even go into the Puma NTO door lock.
The person who supplied the door, let's call him Richard, said sorry, but we don't get keys with the NTO doors.
Then sent me a link to a RN page:
https://www.roversnorth.com/parts/cwc500190_lock_barrel_and_2_keys_defender_2007

So this link provided me with a clue.
It looked to me that the ignition key would fit the lock and when we tried the key it went into the lock, but wouldn't turn the lock.
Luckily the door was unlocked and I used a small allen key to push the barrel lock in and remove it.
Then with the ignition key inserted, filed away the outside edge of the brass tumblers until the lock would rotate with the vehicle ignition key inserted,
Works like a champ.
If you study the 4 pictures it will show the key, lock, and the progression of locking and unlocking the door.
I sent the pictures to Richard and he had no idea this could be done.
Now the vehicle has one less key on the ring.

My 90 uses the same key for everything, all doors, ignition and fuel cap. It is baffling that LR used different key style on the same vehicles.

I have 3 keys on my ~94 110. Ignition, doors and fuel cap. I replaced the fuel cap, but even the original leaking one was a different key. Anybody have a source for the door key? Admittedly I haven't looked hard, but 3 different local hardware stores turned me away.

"with that clue I decided to try to use the ignition key on the late barrel"
