Would love some help figuring out what to do.

After sitting outside in the cold overnight I went to start my 200ti... It turned a couple times then stopped and left me with a whining noise. Even if I pull the key out this noise continues. I have to pull the battery cut off switch to stop it.

1 Its practically a brand new starter motor

2 how the heck could this thing keep making noise when i remove the key?

thanks guys

the starter bendix is not popping out when the starter is being energized. Thus the whirring noise of the starter freewheeling without any load on it. The starter solenoid is sticking in the the "circuit closed" or energized position but not sticking "fully" to provide enough amps to make the starter work properly.

Give the starter a few wacks with a long extension and it should free it up and try again.

OR

The bendix has seized from lack or lubrication or cold weather

It worked. I feel stupid for not immediately trying that. I figured because it was whining without the key in there was some greater wiring issue. Don't know what Id do without this forum.

Next time you have the time available pull the starter and lube the Bendix or replace the solenoid

Glad I could help

To grease a bendix shaft or not, if you grease be easy on it, old grease makes them stick. I have never greased one but used that powderd lock graphite on um.

I had the same thing happen to me a few times with my 300 Tdi. One time it was still spinning with the engine running. I ended up replacing the starter.
