TDI Christmas Porn

A couple shots of a customers presents to his defender
A VGT turbo pretty much makes boost from idle on up,
Completely transforms a tdi truck. I did not increase fueling, but damn I wanted to.
With stock fueling, this truck pulls hills I'm used to down shifting on, in 5th.

Is that from Bell or Allisport or someone else? I’m definitely doing one for my 130.

You can buy them from Turbo Technics, Bell, or Allisport. This one came from Andrew Graham @ Allisport. Came with his branded elbows.

Made a huge difference on this truck. You have to change your driving style. Instead of winding the engine out to stay on boost, you shift crazy early and let the turbo do its thing. Much easier on the whole drive train, and way fun to drive. Be interesting to hear how mileage is effected, guessing it will improve a good bit. These are more reasonably priced than former VVT, VNT turbo's offered for these trucks-around $1200.

300 version

Truck also got heated tdci seats, new radiator and intercooler, timing belt job, water pump, led's.
Waiting for built GBR True Trac diffs from Bill to go in the 24 spline disco axles that are going under it with new vented rotor's and calipers.
Santa was mighty good to this old girl. Truck belongs to a forum member here.

Thanks Doug. I’m psyched. I was always pleased with how my 300tdi 130 with the 1.4 t-case ran better than my tdi 90 with the 1.2. But I really want this thing to get out of its own way and be able to tow something heavier than 1200 lbs without wheezing - this is going to be just the ticket.

UD, did you change the turbo boost pipe work from factory, or do these work differently? Cheers

Unlike older versions, direct replacement John, no modifications other than the oil feed to the turbo and the return line to the block and the new ones come with it. Sweet kit.

Put it together and drive down to the farm one Saturday, I'll make it go for you.

The VGT turbo for my 300tdi changed the game for my 90. Especially since I have the slush box. I don’t have a full width intercooler, but a stock looking upgraded one made locally. I can see how full width would be ideal, it has more it could go on the passes but EGTs get to high for me at the moment. But low end increase is amazing. Anyone considering it, go for it.

Questions:
What is the expected horsepower increase on a 200TDI?
It also says not to use a snorkel with the turbo, correct?

Thanks Rocky....

This is the one thing I haven?t done to my 200tdi to boost power - but I have a snorkel, and they advise against it..

Who is they ? Link to "they" ? Being a direct replacement for the original turbo, intended to utilize the oe air filter canister and associated plumbing, I call complete BS on that.

Perfomance gains depend on: the condition of your injectors, IP, efficiency of your intercooler, where timing is set, and how much fueling is increased.

From the Allisport website...

From Allisports website:
Non-restrictive intake system ? we advise against the use of a raised or nonstandard air intake. Please note ? any restriction to the air intake on performance turbos will invalidate warranty. This can include raised air intakes.

I too am thinking about swapping out my turbo but I like my snorkel.

What I've been telling locals around here is to just leave your snorkel elbow disconnected from the air filter canister. when you need it hook it up which is about 1% of the time driving the truck if you daily drive it.

I'm assuming they don't want the snorkel or raised air intake connect it up because the long intake path reduces the amount of air flow that the turbo can consume... Frankly I don't know the math but it sounds right

Raised air intake adds resistance, usually avoided by using large diameter hose, which many route horribly and or kink etc.

This isnt an upsized turbo, it is designed as a direct replacement- intake & exhaust are exactly the same diameters, the stock rover exhaust down pipe is used, the special sauce is the vane geometry. IE it is sized to the engine. It reduces turbo lag and makes boost from idle on up.

This is performance warranty verbiage (warranty is 90 days btw), also says:
must be be installed by a professional
your exhaust cannot be restrictive
your intercooler cannot be stock

This because they are recommending raising fueling whis can raise temps.

The big one is proof that the oil was changed on install. They are worried about heat (egts) and the turbo bearing/seal, for 90 days. I wouldnt hesitate to run one with a raised intake, but I'm a mechanic and watch egts more than any other gauge.
Bell has a better write up.

So Bell / Allisport - they are all the same product then? (Made by Turbo Technics). Is that correct?
