TD5 died on highway with white smoke

Sorry, this is a shot-for-help in the dark for multiple reasons:
- only 100 mile experience with this 2000 110 Td5
- I’m not even close to the vehicle myself
- very little feedback at this time, but tomorrow we will be able to investigate more

here is what I know:
- 180K miles
- vehicle was cruising at ~65mph
- vehicle got to a highway exchanger, let off the accelerator in that right curve lane (~45mph?)
- white smoke came out (based on witness feedback after the fact)
- engine died on said right turn lane
- engine would not start after this and had to be towed

since I have -zero- Td5 experience, I’m hoping someone will point me to a basic troubleshooting guide! :)

anyone?

Really hoping this is either turbo pipe that collapse (odd it would not at least restart vs just lack of power) -or- the CPS that died.
alternatively, another sensor like the fuel sensor would also be ok as a failure point. Can I just unplug the MAF to have it go in limp mode like a V8 would?

Has the cylinder head ever been replaced? 2000 is a 10P engine, known issue about that mileage. Had to do mine at 140,000kms .You are burning coolant, probably a head gasket, or location dowels have failed and head has shifted. if it's not been done, you will need a new AMC head from Turner Engineering.https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/ldf500160-amc-td5-cylinder-head-early-c2x20634372

That is quite possibly the issue 👍🏻

The 10P engine had plastic locator pins to hold the head from sliding out of place. I would start there as others have stated.

More data points:
- oil looks good (no Mayo effect)
- coolant was ok/bit low (but.... not sure what it should have been)
- engine started without hesitation today (ie from cold)
- engine stuck at idle speed (not gaining any rpm when pushing gas pedal)

I’m thinking fuel delivery or sensor (CPS) more than head?

Bet if you drove it, that the coolant leak and smoke screen would appear when hot.
BTw, burning oil plume dissipates differently to a water vapor based coolant boil off.

Pull the main plug from the ECU under the passenger seat and look for traces of engine oil. Yes, sounds weird... oil can migrate through the insulation of the wires on the the injector harness, through to the ECU fouling the connection to the ECU. If so, replace the harness, or at least clean it with brake clean, clean the ECU plug as well. (been there, done that)

I'm more prone to thinking head issue though.

update:
Truck was finally plugged into computer and the PMH (French for CPS) is reported faulty/not working right.
along that info an inspection showed that the safety/mot/state inspection station that it visited before is either careless or can be bribed.....

So, crank position sensor? Common issue. Hopefully it proves to be the culprit.

You should still check the ECU plugs for oil ingress, pretty much every Td5 i have seen with that kind of mileage has it. (unless the PO already replaced the harness)

Has not been replaced yet, so can’t tell for sure, but the CPS was reported bad -and- mechanic reported that wiring harness to CPS had been repaired. Of course, he did not “assess” the repair! :)

was there really no “fix” for that oil in wiring harness? It feels like enough time has passed that someone should have found a permanent fix.

Quick update: CPM sensor replaced, engine wiring harness repaired -> truck ran great for ~50 miles/80km.

Now, after this drive (and starafter warming up, engine seems to misfire/run on 4 cylinders. No engine light. The injector wiring harness is on order as my interweb research points to it being the culprit.

Yes! Sorted!
New wiring harness fixed the misfiring that was experienced.
Thanks for checking on the Td5/me! :)

The last issue I fixed was for the rear right parking light (or was that the stop light?) not working which turned out to be a corroded wire/connection in the hardness (some form of the pigtail/“Y” connection right after the chassis exit). Took a couple of hours under cold and raining weather to address.
Otherwise seems to work great and saw some greenlaning exposure. Even the center diff lock light works! ;)

I bought a Nanocom and will need to dig into the codes I saw and figure out root cause(s). But engine runs fine, got its first filter/oil change and all.
