Switching Switches

I'm to the point in this project where I'm actually putting it together in a way that is meant to be permanent, and usable. One of the things I want to do is change out all the switches to Carling style. I'm unsure, but I may even be able to change out the rear wiper switch.

So how do I know which switch to buy? And where is the best place to get the Carling bodies and rockers? Also, the female connectors?

Here is what I know I need for what is currently in the car, everything else will be an added mod.

  1. Hazard
  2. Dome Light
  3. Rear Defrost
  4. Rear Wiper
  5. HVAC Fan (Can't remember how/where this one works! Have not even begun to put the HVAC system back together.)

Contact Jason... I'm doing the same thing also... I hope to get it done before my 1st grade son goes to college.

Update... I got the MUD UK hazard switch and his wiring kit. I think he sells the hazard switch too.

The rocker switch was from Amazon.

Get the switch connector and plugs too... That way you won't need to splice the harness when doing the interior lamp switch.

That's expensive, but probably worth it in the end. Do the wire ends just plug right to the existing wires then? (After they areremoved from the existing plug end.)

And that last pic is what you have vs. what you are replacing, correct?

Yes... Pricey. But it will last.

I know for a fact that both the hazard switch and dome/light switch will fail. And at the end you'll go Carling. :)

The wires plug in individually, because you are connecting from a plug to the harness.

Yes... that's the OEM switch next to a Carling aka Rocker

I'm just saying most of the Carling switches are $10-$15 or so, this one is on the very high end.

Yeah, all three of my switches down there are breaking!

I'm just wondering if you do any splicing, or do you simply pop the current wires out, then connect them to the harness provided by SeriesDefender.com?

The hazard switch is a special build switch... btw... I believe mud-U.K. Originally commissioned them.. buy the switch and Jason's haemrness which is plug and play or cut and splice your choice..
other Carling switches can be had from SDO or mouser (just you need to figure out which one of the hundreds of configs you want for what.

That's what I was wondering, because I couldn't find any one Carling switch that seemed like it would work.

I think I can figure out the others. I'll post my progress on here as I get them.

Just ordered. Looks like a good upgrade. My switch is out, and. I needed something anyway.

Is there anything special about the rear defrost switch? It "seems like" a simple on-off where the relay takes care of the timing elsewhere. But I'm a noob at this.

I believe that you want it on a timer. I'm not sure if the switches have timers but if they don't, you can put a simple timer module inline between the switch and the relay.

Check out the reviews. There's a guy using it to switch his Range Rover's headlights and he included a circuit diagram:

Well, I have the whole thing in place as it was originally, I just need a switch that will work with original harness. I think it is supposed to be a momentary switch, and that the relay (and/or a timer) is currently in line. But I don't have the switch anymore, and I think mine was broken anyway. Although that item on Amazon is probably better than the original!

I'm not seeing it in any of the diagrams I have, does anyone know if the 1988 rear defrost switch is a simple OFF-ON, or is it an OFF-MOMENTARY? I was hoping I could see the relay and such in the wiring diagram!

Oh, thanks! I might have missed that diagram in the workshop manual. I was looking for it in the main diagram.
